LESSONS FROM PROVERBS (2)
Today marks the eleventh lesson in this series and all through the lessons we've had thus far, we see how it is that the Lord has been our help, isn't it? The Lord is not done with us yet as we still have a lot to learn in this second part of lessons from Proverbs. Glory to God. That which you would have to do will be to open your heart first to receive the word with gladness, and second, to decide to do as the lessons instruct. And I trust that in doing these, the Lord will indeed bless you even more through his word. Amen.
Almost everyone has something he or she likes, isn't it? Take for instance, you may like a particular thing so much that you cannot do without it, right? It may be a dress, a specific colour, a particular kind of food, etc. This likeness may be as a result of the fact that the particular kind of food for example doesn't cause you serious complications when you take it compared to others, right? If you have the chance to choose between the one that causes you serious complications and the one that doesn't, which will you choose?
You can so much have delight in something that another becomes detestful to you if there's ever a word as that. For example, you can so much take delight in beans that rice becomes something you don't want to see. That's the point of the whole illustration. That's what today's lesson seeks to explain to us as all well. The passage of scripture to be considered is seen below, shall we?
"They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the Lord : but such as are upright in their way are his delight" ( Proverbs 11:20).
The scripture above tells to us that which the Lord likes so much. We can also say that it reveals to us what the Lord's delight is. Who are those that are the Lord's delight? What makes them so much delightful to the Lord? But first we have to see the comparison made between two categories of persons in that text. Shall we? The scripture talks about the froward and then the upright. It talks about the fact that the froward (they that of a froward heart) and by froward we mean to say those who hearts are not the Lord's. Those who act contrary to the counsel of God.
It is displayed in traits they show such as dishonesty, lies, unfaithfulness, disobedience to God's instruction. Those people the scripture says that they are an abomination to the Lord meaning that the Lord is not any way pleased with that which they do and would that they repent and come to him that they may live for him and act according to his divine counsel. However, there's this other kind of people that the Lord takes delight in because he is pleased with that which they do and the scripture calls them upright. Praise God.
This means that they walk in ways pleasing to the Lord, they are obedient to his instructions, men of honest report, trustworthy, men who do no evil and whose conscience are pure before men and God. These are the Lord's delight. A charge comes to you and I today to examine ourselves; can we say that we are God's delight? Can we say that the things we do are indeed pleasing to God? God delights in the upright? Are you upright? If you are not in this category, the Lord bids to come. The Lord help us in Jesus' name.
Thought for the day: Can you say you're God's delight? Can you say that the things you do are pleasing to God? Are you upright?
