The Proof that You Know God: Gospel Today Devotional - 12th May, 2023

Grace to you and peace from God. Trust you are in great health. I believe that by the grace of God you have been really well. Blessed be the name of the Lord who has indeed been our help and has given us another opportunity to learn from his word. It has been from one level of understanding to the other, hasn't it? Yes, of course. It is my prayer that the lesson of today blesses you as others have in Jesus' name. Amen.

The Proof that You Know God: Gospel Today Devotional - 12th May, 2023

Today, we shall continue with our lesson from the book of 1 John chapter 4 as you all know that we have been considering the book of 1 John as a series for a while now. In our previous lesson, we learnt how to differentiate the spirit of truth from the spirit of error and how that we are not to believe every spiritual claim, isn't it? That we are to try them to see whether they be of God or not. This is really important because many false prophets have gone into the world.

The question we needed to ask ourselves as a result was this, how much truth do you know to say this is true and this is not, right? How much of God's word do you know cause you need the knowledge given in his word to discern spiritual claims? Hallelujah. Today, we shall be considering some selected verses of scripture and I trust the Lord to bless our hearts greatly. Praise God. Let's see the passage of scripture below, shall we?

"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. [8] He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. [9] In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. [10] Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. [11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. [12] No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us". (1 John 4:7-12)

After the apostle John had talked about the need to discern spirits (vs 1-6), he then sees the need to talk about a very important subject that concerns believers and the proof that we know God lies in this very subject. Let's begin to examine the texts; he begins by what we may refer to as a plea. He says, "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and everyone who loves knows God". It is important as believers to know that one of the things we have been commanded to do is to love (1 John 3:22-25,  Mathew 22:35-40). We will be termed disobedient if we do not do that which we have been commanded to do. Hallelujah.

You see, everyone who loves is born of God and knows God because God himself is love. Does that mean that those who do not believe in God can be said to be of him because they are kind? It takes one born of God to understand what love truly is. Love is God and God is love. That a person does certain acts of kindness does not mean he is born of God. The message here really is that anyone who claims to be born of God and does not walk in love cannot be believed to know God who himself is love. The apostle John then pleads to love one another for love is of God. He that does not love does not know God. God as a result of love gave his Son to die for us ( vs 9, 10; John 3:16).

If God so loved us that he didn't keep his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ from being the propitiation for our sins, we ought also to love one another. This is the proof that we Indeed know God and have been begotten of him. Indeed no man has seen God at anytime (vs 12) but if we love one another, it means that God dwells in us and us in God and that his love is perfected in us. This is because God himself is love. Do you know God? Does he truly dwell in you? Do you walk in love? You have to remember that anyone who does not love does not know God because if he did, he would know that the God he claims to know is love. Hence, must love even as God loved. The Lord bless his word in our hearts. Amen.

Thought for the day: If you claim to know God and that you have been begotten of him indeed but act contrary to his nature, it means you do not know him cause if you truly did, you would know that to know God is to know love for God himself is love.
