Learning To Be Contented: Gospel Today Devotional - 15th November, 2022

Most people who did Economics as a subject in high school would be familiar with this concept, "Human wants are insatiable but the resources available to satisfy such wants are limited". This means that humans want a lot of things, and some of those things, they do not need.

Learning To Be Contented: Gospel Today Devotional - 15th November, 2022

This is the reason concepts like the scale of preference or opportunity cost are introduced so that the things you need urgently can come first while those that are not necessary at the moment can be gotten later or go for something similar to save cost.

We need to understand as believers that while it is true that we want many things which we don't need, we should be satisfied with the things we have that we need. Let's see the passage of scripture below:

"But godliness with contentment is great gain. [7] For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. [8] And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. (1 Timothy 6:6-8)

The Scripture teaches contentment in many ways. Permit me to say that one of the reasons people want a lot of things without necessarily needing them could be a lack of contentment. The scale of preference or opportunity cost that Scripture has put in place to curb unnecessary demands is contentment.

We are to be contented, that is, to be satisfied with what we have as believers. This is chiefly because we brought nothing into this world, and we would take nothing out of it. This is not to say that you should not desire great things, or do great things.

The emphasis here is to be satisfied with what God gives to you. Be satisfied with your spouse. Be satisfied with your members or followers as ministers. Be satisfied with yourself. Be content with the food you eat and drink and receive with thanks. Be satisfied with the car you drive or the house you own. Be satisfied with everything God gives to you. Godliness with contentment is a great gain. The Lord bless his word in our hearts. Amen.

Daily Nugget: Sometimes, as believers, we seek many things, and some of them we do not need because we have not learned to be contented with what we have. Godliness with contentment is a great gain.
