Rejoicing Still: Gospel Today Devotional - 31st October, 2023

There is a saying that “when things get tough, only the tough gets going”. This is largely true because, you see, anyone can claim to be tough until he is tested. Most persons claim to possess so much depth until they are faced with seemingly tough situations that put their claims to test.

Rejoicing Still: Gospel Today Devotional - 31st October, 2023

Let me paint a picture. In marriage, it is said that both partners are meant not just for the good times but also for seemingly difficult times, right? Imagine a woman who got married to a man because of the money he had at the time, and all of a sudden things became different, and he no longer had the money. Do you think the woman will still remember "for better or worse"? I doubt. She may likely opt out of the marriage. The idea is this, she was only available for the good times. It takes a tough woman (a woman after God's heart) to stand with her husband at such a time.

Today, the Lord seeks to reveal to us, and that, through the scripture what we as believers need to do when things don't really go the way we expect them to; times when we should weep as a result of the circumstances we find ourselves in, times when our strength to laugh, and be happy fail us. What should be our attitude at such times? See for yourself in the passage below,

"Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: [18] Yet I will rejoice in the Lord , I will joy in the God of my salvation". (Habbakuk 3:17-18)

We must come to a point when that which makes us joyful does not come from the external things or people around. Some people seek their joy from friends, family, spouses, etc. The only problem with this is that often times, they end up disappointing that they are left sad, and discouraged. The only true remedy to this is to know that true joy comes from the Lord alone. So those times when the going gets tough, only the tough ( those who seek their joy in the God) get going (keep being joyful).

Let's take a look at the passage under consideration, what can we learn from this? This is to point our attention to the fact that there are times when the fig tree may not blossom, when there will be no fruits in the vine, etc. And although there may be times like this, I have arrived at this decision, I will still rejoice in the Lord, I will still joy in the God of my salvation. This means that the joy the writer gets from the Lord is way more important to him than the circumstances he may find himself. No matter the situation, he still would rejoice in the Lord. Glory to God!

Doesn't this send a message to you today? How many times have you denied yourself of your joy in the Lord because of that situation? How long will you keep depriving yourself of your joy in the Lord? Will you find for yourself a reason to rejoice in God regardless of that situation? When the going gets tough, will you still rejoice? The word of the Lord comes to you today as seen in the passage above, that although sometimes, things may not be pleasant, and the situation may not be fair, you  should rejoice ever still in God because in him lies the strength that is needed at such times. The Lord cause these words to sink deeply into your hearts today. Amen.

Though for the day:

Although sometimes things may be unpleasant, and the situation unfair, one thing to do is this, even at such times, rejoice still, and find your strength in God.
