3 Biblical Ways to Overcome Addictions

Titus 2:14, "Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works."

At redemption, our souls were renewed. We were made a brand new person in Christ. As a result, we are expected to be zealous, that is, having eagerness and enthusiasm towards doing every work of good.

As believers today, the command is to be zealous unto every good work which means that we must stop being permissive to every work of evil. Permissiveness makes you an accomplice to the evil works of darkness. Likewise, the Bible advises us to have no fellowship with unclean works of darkness (Ephesians 5:11). We were not told to have "some" fellowship.

Addiction is a form of fellowship with unfruitful works because it entails the inability to bring one's flesh and desires to subjection to the spirit of God that dwells in us. Therapies and motivation will only go a very short distance to help whoever suffers from addiction and the one true solution is by breaking that barrier and bondage of the devil by the word and power of God. Addictions to sin, drugs and every other moral and societal decadence can be overcome by adhering to the word of God through the Bible and the teachings from true men of God.

How to overcome addictions by the word.

1. Walk by the principles of God's word and not by your feelings.

Every believer who wants to counter addiction by the word must believe that whatever the word of God says is stronger than however or whatever you feel per time. The principles of God's word allow us to understand that although we live in this world, we do not belong here and so, no matter how "glorified" the works of flesh may look to us, we, as believers, must choose to adhere by God's commandment.

The Bible tells us in 1 John 4:17 that "Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgement: because as he is, so are we in this world." That is, we are an embodiment of Christ and because Jesus, when he was in this world, never dressed like the world, talked like them, or behaved like them, we must do likewise. Jesus was just in their midst but he was there as the light! The same thing applies to every believer who will overcome his addictions by following God's way.

2. Focus, Concentrate and be Persistent with the word.

You cannot go wrong dwelling in the word of God. Hebrews 4:12 tells us an important characteristic of God's word, "For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires." [NLT]

Continuous focus, concentration and persistence with the word of God exposes every thought and desire of ours and gives us a chance to turn them all over unto the will of God. It renews, refreshes and transforms our minds and thoughts giving us the chance to achieve our goal of being a new man.

3. Learn to pray in the Holy Ghost with the tongues of victory.

As beautiful as Christian prosperity is, your spirituality comes before your prosperity because your prosperity might end up being destroyed if your spiritual stance isn't strong enough. This is the reason why you must remove yourself from the pressure of this world, if not, you will compromise shortly.

Worldly music and movies are triggers for a sinful life. The Bible's solution to this is that we sing in Psalms and hymns (Ephesians 5:19) so that the flesh might not have dominion over us. Pictures deal a lot with you because anything you keep watching controls you which is why adverts are always consistently placed before our faces to make us remember particular brands. Lastly, Apostle Paul in Ephesians 5:18 says, "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit ''. The wines of this world - Sin, drugs, formation, drunkenness and so many others are capable of drowning the believer but what stands as our advantage is the presence of God's spirit in us that teaches and directs us in the path we should go.
