As to the Lord: Gospel Today Devotional - 18th August, 2022

There are times we do things, not with the whole of our hearts. This is very possible especially when we have been offended by the person for whom we do such things. Well, sometimes, it may not even be that we are offended but rather the fact that we just do them for the sake of doing them, and not because our hearts agree to do such things.

As to the Lord: Gospel Today Devotional - 18th August, 2022

It's just like a couple who confess daily that they love each other when in the real sense, they don't.   They just say that to deceive themselves. This often may be a result of some hidden issues that have turned their hearts against one another. Let's examine the passage of Scripture below,

"And whatsoever ye do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; [24] Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ" (Colossians 3:23-24)

The scripture above talks about the fact that we should do things not just anyhow, but heartily, that is, with the whole of our heart. This implies that it is very much possible not to do things heartily just because we think that we do things as to men and not to God.

What the scripture is saying right here may mean that although many times we are hurt such that we think not to do the things we should regardless of the person that has hurt us, we should still do the things we have always done, heartily. We should still do them with the whole of our hearts. Why is this? It is because we do not do those things because the people for whom we do them deserve them actually but we honor God by doing them regardless of what such persons have done to us.

This is because as Christians, we serve the Lord Christ and not the people for whom we may work or live whether they be parents, senior colleagues, bosses, friends, or even our spouse and that from him we receive our reward, not them. We should therefore not see what we do as just serving men alone, but that we honor the Lord through them regardless of what they do to us. Hence, we as Christians should do all things with the whole of our hearts because we do them not for men, but God. May the Lord bless his word in our hearts. Amen.

Daily Nugget: As Christians, we should do things with the whole of our hearts even when the people for whom we do such things do not take into recognition what we do or offend us. This is because we do it not for them but for God who alone can reward us.

Prayer: Lord, even when people for whom I do things take what I do for granted, help me to still do them with all my heart cause I know my reward comes from you and not them.
