A Well of Life: Gospel Today Devotional - 8th February 2023

It is a beautiful thing when you get to a well, and find water in it, isn't it? Building a well filled with water is not an easy job, and I know you agree with that as well. To get a source from which everyone is to draw from, water to quench their thirst, and do other basic things is something that requires time, and effort.

A Well of Life: Gospel Today Devotional - 8th February 2023

A well may define as a deep hole made in the ground through which water can be removed (Merriam-Webster). We already established the fact that getting one may be a very difficult task but it's still very possible. Why is a well important? Because it produces water for everyone to use. Water in return helps people in many ways, such as drinking, washing, cooking, bathing, etc. It is important therefore that a well is not just dug but that water is found; for a well filled with water is that which will benefit anyone.

The illustration about the well above fits well into the life of a believer. It is important to note that as a believer, your life should inspire others, encourage, and lift them, and your words as well, especially your words. The scripture below explains better:

"The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked". (Proverbs 10:11).

You see, the mouth of the righteous (those who live right according to the will of God, and begotten of him) is the well of life (a well with water sufficient enough to sustain life): but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked (those who act contrary to the will of God).

What does this imply? The mouth of the righteous can be likened to a well, and just like a well is expected to be with water such that it is beneficial to anyone, the mouth of the righteous is to be filled not with water now, but with words that give life, hope, encouragement, and inspiration to people.

Just as the product of a literal well is water, the product of the mouth of the righteous is the right word. Just as water sustains, and helps people achieve a lot, giving life to those who thirst especially, words from the mouth of the righteous should also give life to people. You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, and as a result, your mouth is a well of life, producing words that give and sustain life.

Thought for the day: Your mouth as a believer should be a well of life that produces gracious words so that people who come to draw from you may find rest for their souls.
