The Compassionate Nature of Christ: Gospel Today Devotional - 20th April, 2023

The Book of John in the fifth chapter records a very important event. The chapter gives the account of people who were lamed, blind and had all kinds of issues that needed attention. Amongst the people who were there was a man who had been there for thirty-eight, also disabled with no hope of getting his freedom until the Lord Jesus saw him, and attended to his situation. It doesn't matter how long that situation has been, the Lord will visit it. The passage of scripture under consideration is seen below,

"When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath".(John 5:6-9).

The Bible says when Jesus saw him lie, and knew he had been there for a long time, he took interest in his case. Here we see the compassionate nature of our Lord Jesus. He didn't ignore the man or pretend as though nothing was wrong. He asked if the man was willing to let him help. He felt his pain and was not happy seeing him that way. When we as believers see people in need as well, just like our Lord Jesus, we should show concern.

Secondly, when Jesus asked him if he was willing to be made whole, he didn't answer directly, why? Because he was tired and needed to explain to Jesus why he needed the help. Many thought he complained, no, he only explained to Jesus why the question of being willing to be made whole wasn't an option. This explains the helplessness of the man. And in his explanation came the answer Jesus needed.

The Lord Jesus on getting the answer instructed him to pick his bed and rise. And the man believed and did as he was instructed. Here, we see, his response of faith That situation isn't hopeless, neither fatal nor final. Jesus sees you and knows you've been there a long time. He is asking you today, are you willing to be made whole? Give him your answer like the man in our study, and what he says to you, do! May the Lord comfort your heart today in Jesus' name. Amen.

Thought for the day: It does not matter how long that situation has been, Christ will come to you in his compassionate nature and saving power to deliver.
