Navigating Modern-Day Trends in Nigeria's Pentecostal Church

As followers of Christ, it is crucial for us to examine the trends in our churches through the lens of God's word and discern their impact on our faith, community, and spiritual growth. Let us turn to the Scriptures for guidance and seek the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

God’s word in 2nd Timothy 4:3-4 (NIV) says "the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."

I. The Quest for Prosperity

One of the prevailing trends in our congregation today is the emphasis on material prosperity. While it is true that God desires to bless His children, we must not allow the pursuit of wealth and material possessions to overshadow our pursuit of godliness and spiritual maturity. The Bible warns us against the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10) and encourages us to seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).

2. The Influence of Personal Revelations

In our modern era, personal revelations and experiences are highly valued in the church. While it is important to acknowledge the significance of personal encounters with God, we must also ensure that these experiences align with the teachings of Scripture. The Berean Christians serve as an excellent example for us, as they examined the Scriptures daily to confirm the truth (Acts 17:11). Let us remember that God's Word is the ultimate authority by which we must evaluate all experiences and revelations.

3. The Role of Worship and Sensationalism

Contemporary worship styles and the desire for sensational experiences have become prominent in many Pentecostal churches. While there is nothing inherently wrong with embracing vibrant and expressive worship, we must guard against allowing emotions and theatrics to become the focus of our worship. True worship goes beyond external expressions and must be rooted in spirit and truth (John 4:24). Let us ensure that our worship is sincere, humble, and centered on God alone.

4. The Call for Discernment

As the body of Christ, we need to cultivate discernment in the face of these modern-day trends. We should not blindly follow popular teachings or personalities but test everything against the unchanging Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Let us seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to distinguish between what is true of God and what may lead us astray.

To sum it up, while modern-day trends have their place in shaping the Pentecostal Church in Nigeria, let us remember the timeless truths found in God's Word. Our pursuit of prosperity should never overshadow our pursuit of godliness and the kingdom of God. Personal revelations must align with Scripture, and worship should be a genuine expression of our love for God. With discerning hearts, let us navigate these trends, being anchored in God's truth and led by the Holy Spirit.

May we walk in humility, love, and unity, embracing the fullness of God's Word and His purpose for our lives.
