Christian Fiction: The Job Description (Part 2)

RECALL: PART ONE

... I felt at home immediately, as if I had always belonged here, but I could not explain it. I noticed that most of the workers were either focused on their work, smiling at one another, or helping one another out. It was ...

"Shall we proceed to where you would get your job description?"

"This man is so good at distracting someone's thoughts shaa." I muttered.

PART TWO

We walked to the Human Resource Unit and I was given the warmest welcome of my life, as if they've been expecting me. Anyway, I finally received the document and flipped through it. The only pages that looked interesting to me were the front page, on which was a big WELCOME print and what the company stood for in brief, and the back page showing the globe and the numerous connections that this company had.

"I am so going to impress the boss that in two years, the boss will be compelled to promote me to another continent." I muttered.

"Did you say something?" He turned as if there was a question.

"Uhmm... I'm just mesmerized." Looking around to back up my lie.

"Well, don't be with this little building. It is more glorious than this. Just make sure that you study that document in your hand, and you will be good to go." He was about to leave when it dawned on me that he actually told me nothing about this job, except this document and a promise.

"But excuse me. ..." He paused and turned to me. "What exactly am I to do? When and where? You didn't even collect my application letter from me." From one wonder to another. I thought.

He gave a wide smile and even chuckled.

"Actually, we don't need your past or your long list of what you think you can do. We know already that you are the right person for the job. All you need is in that document. Study it and do everything written in/on it, and you will indeed be promoted." He smirked at me.

I placed my fingers on my dripping mouth.  This man actually heard me. I thought.

"But what about your contact number, in case it is what I was told versus what I got? Or at least, your name?" I could not hide my fears.

"Don't be afraid. You don't need my contact, but my name is REST."

"Owkai ..." That's strange.

"Let me walk you to where I met you." He was about to go to the door before I convinced him otherwise. He agreed after much persuasion and I went home with mixed feelings.

At least, I got a traveling job.

(TWO YEARS LATER)

I was cooking my favorite food – pizza with extra beef and mixed berry smoothie – when I received a call from an unknown number. I picked it, ready to shut down any voice that would sound strange or cocky in my ears. At first, there was a long silence when I picked the call. When the caller perceived that I was not going to speak, she finally spoke.

“Good day, ma’am. I am calling from the headquarters of ELSHADDAI & CO., the company you applied to two years ago.”

“Oh! Seriously?! Wow! Such an honor, ma. I hope nothing is wrong, ma.” That silence again, but this time, it was short.

“Ma’am, do you mean that you haven’t saved this contact before?” the caller asked in wonder and worry.

“Yes, ma. Is anything the matter?” I began to worry. Did I do anything wrong?

“This means that you didn’t study your job description, because this unit line, named MERCY, was included in the list of contacts on page 20, section 16, sub-section 4 of that same job description.”

Before she finished her statement, I ran to my bedroom to pick it up from where I buried it eight months ago. I never passed page 5 ever since I got it from that REST guy.

As I carefully searched, I saw that the list did not only include MERCY, but HELP, STRENGTH, DEFENCE, LONGSUFFERING, WISDOM, and PROVISION. I also saw that I was expected to call any one of them any time of any day in any location, and they are to respond to me immediately, as long as I called the right unit line. Before I read any further, I burst into tears, deep and regretful tears.

“I HAVE SUFFERED!” I cried out loud.

The MERCY caller listened to me groan for thirty minutes without hanging up or leaving the call at all. When she was sure that I was done, she continued.

“After this call, I think you need to call the boss and thank him for insisting on me to reach out to you, because according to our reports, we last received your radar a year ago. In other words, you started malfunctioning and working for another boss since this year started. …”

“I’m sorry for cutting you short but I have lost you now. What do you mean by I have been malfunctioning for one year?” My tears started drying up as I became confused.

“Okay ma’am. That is why I am here. Can you recall and tell me what happened to your business for the past one year?”

“Yes, ma, but it is a long story.”

“Don’t worry. I’m right here, till we get you back on track.”

Wow!

From the Author's Desk

Why do you think this lady cried? Do you have any idea by what MERCY meant by malfunctioning?
I know that you are a Christian, but do you know what are at your disposal and how to use them when needed?

All these questions would be answered in Part Three, in two days time. Anticipate!
