WHY ARE YOUR PRAYERS UNANSWERED?

                   WHY ARE YOUR PRAYERS UNANSWERED?

A man bought a large land that has gold lying underneath its soil. He was very happy when he got the land and he began to till the soil. Every day he goes there digging up the soil so as to reach the gold, the villagers mocked him about wasting his time, his friends advised him to quit and get another land but he kept believing the gold was there and he needed to just dig more. One night, after tirelessly digging the ground, he was tired and retired back to his house. He then began to play every word spoken to him and decided to yield, he said in his heart “I am guessing the seller lied to me, there is no gold in this land, I will just sell it.” Early the next morning, he placed a signboard of ‘for sale’ in front of it. Two days later, a buyer came and purchased the land at a lesser price to what he bought it. Three days later, the new owner of the land dug the ground consistently for one week and he hit the gold. He was happy at the new treasure and went to show the old owner, the old owner couldn’t believe what he saw and said, ‘if only I had waited one more week, I would have gotten my gold.’

I once heard a popular saying, the devil is not scared of a man that can punch a bag one million times in a day, he is scared of the one that can punch the bag for one hour per day.

What do you think prayer is? A lot of people have wrong perceptions on what prayer is all about. Prayer is not just ‘asking for things.’ In the Bible, prayer is also relationship, alignment, trust, surrender, communication and growth. Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes wait, and sometimes no.

There are many reasons why your prayers are not being answered. I’d tell you why.

1.     Praying without the scripture: The Bible is a powerful tool left for us by God. It is a lamp to guide us into the prayer room. God exalts the word much more than his name, so, praying with the revelation of the word gives access for audience in the throne room. Praying with the scripture is wisdom to getting your prayers answered.

2.     Praying amiss: In James 4:3, scripture says ‘Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.’ Other translations say, ‘When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives.’ Have you ever asked why you were praying that prayer? Praying with selfish desires rather than God’s will. This happens when the heart behind the prayer is selfish, prideful, manipulative, or centered only on personal pleasure. For example, A student prays: ‘Lord, let me pass this exam.’ But the student refuses to study, cheats, or only wants to pass to boast over others. The problem is not the prayer itself; it is the motive and lifestyle behind it. Another example: Someone prays for money, not to grow responsibly, help family, or fulfill purpose, but only to oppress others or show off. God often looks beyond the words to the condition of the heart.

3.     Wanting results without responsibility: Sometimes people pray for harvest while ignoring the seed. For example: A person prays: ‘God, make me healthy.’ But they constantly ignore sleep, water, food balance, or medical advice. Prayer is powerful, but God also expects wisdom, discipline, and action. Another example: Someone prays for good relationship but is dishonest, rude, or emotionally immature. Some prayers require transformation, not just miracles.

4.     Hidden sin and disobedience: This do not mean God stops loving people. It means persistent disobedience can affect spiritual sensitivity and fellowship. Example: A person continually lies, harms others, manipulates people, or refuses correction, yet expects deep spiritual intimacy without repentance. It is similar to damaging a friendship while expecting closeness without apology or change. The Bible repeatedly connects repentance with restored fellowship.

5.     Unforgiveness can block the heart: Unforgiveness hardens the heart. For example: Someone is deeply hurt and prays constantly for peace, but internally keeps replaying hatred, revenge, or bitterness every day. Forgiveness does not mean pretending the pain never happened, it means releasing the burden of vengeance. Sometimes unanswered prayer is connected to wounds God wants healed first.

6.     Doubt and double-mindedness: Faith is not pretending problems do not exist. Faith is continuing to trust God even while afraid or uncertain. For example: A person prays ‘God, open this door for me.’ But internally believes: ‘nothing good ever happens to me anyway.’ The heart becomes divided between hope and hopelessness. Biblical faith is steady trust, not emotional perfection just like how father Abraham staggered not through unbelief but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. He didn’t consider the deadness of Sarah’s womb and he never doubted God when he requested for Isaac because he knows he will surely bring him back to life. Now that’s steady faith!

7.      God’s timing may be different: Sometimes delay is not denial. For example: A teenager may desperately want immediate success, marriage, influence, or wealth without the maturity to sustain it. What feels like delay may actually be preparation. A farmer does not plant seeds today and expect harvest tomorrow. Growth has seasons. Many people realize that if God answered me earlier, I would have ruined it.

8.     God sometimes says ‘No’: Even the apostle Paul prayed repeatedly for something to leave him, yet God responded differently. Let’s look at this someone prays intensely for a relationship to continue, but the relationship is destructive, manipulative, or leading them away from peace and purpose. The closed door may actually be protection. Sometimes unanswered prayer is mercy we do not yet understand.

9.     Persistence matters: Some answers come through endurance. A person prays for family restoration, healing, or breakthrough and sees no visible change for months or years. Just like the above story of the man who was tilling the soil for his gold, persistence does something in us, it develops patience, character, dependence, and spiritual strength. Some prayers shape the person praying before they change the situation being prayed about.

Above all, not every answered prayer means:

o   God is angry

o   You are a bad person

o   You lack faith completely

Sometimes:

o   The timing is not right

o   The motive needs refining

o   Wisdom and action are required

o   Healing is needed

o   Or God has another direction

o   You are not praying in accordance to His will

The Bible presents prayer as both communication and transformation.

A powerful prayer is not only ’God, give me what I want.’ Sometimes it becomes ‘God, shape me into what I need to become.’
