Jesus Christ: The Only Source of Eternal Life: Gospel Today Devotional - 1st October - New Man Media

One of the most consequential questions a human being can ask is this: where does eternal life come from, and how can it be obtained? It is not a question that belongs only to philosophers or theologians. It is the question that lies beneath every human search for meaning, every fear of death, every longing for something that does not fade or fail. And it is a question the Scripture answers with remarkable clarity and without ambiguity.

The Gospel of John opens our understanding on this from several directions. In John 3:16, we are told that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son - and that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Here the source of eternal life is already being identified: it flows from God's love, expressed through the gift of His Son, and is received through faith in Him. John 1:12 adds another dimension that as many as received Him, to them He gave the power to become the sons of God. The receiving of Christ is the receiving of a new status and a new life: the life of God Himself, imparted to the believer. And in John 10:28, Jesus speaks of His sheep and declares plainly: “I give unto them eternal life.” Not I point them toward eternal life, not I help them earn eternal life - I give it. The giver and the gift are inseparable.

All of this finds its most concentrated expression in our passage for today:

“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” - 1 John 5:11 (KJV)

The Apostle John uses the word "record" with great deliberateness. A record, in the biblical sense, is a testimony or a witness that has been established and stands as evidence. What is this record? That God has given us eternal life. This is not a matter of speculation or religious opinion. It is attested, confirmed, and settled. God has given us eternal life, and the record stands.

But notice the crucial phrase that follows: “and this life is in his Son.” John does not merely say that eternal life comes through the Son, or that the Son makes eternal life possible. He says the life *is in* the Son. The life and the person of Christ are not separable. You cannot extract eternal life from Jesus and receive it independently of Him any more than you can separate light from the sun. To have the Son is to have the life. To be without the Son is to be without the life.

John states this with even greater directness in the very next verse: “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” (1 John 5:12). There is no middle ground here, no alternative path, no supplementary source. Jesus Himself declared: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). And when Peter stood before the Sanhedrin and was pressed to account for the name by which a man had been healed, his answer was unequivocal: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

This exclusivity is not the narrowness of religious arrogance. It is the precision of a grace that has gone to infinite lengths to provide what nothing else could. The reason Jesus is the only source of eternal life is not arbitrary. It is because He is the only one who has dealt conclusively with the sin that separates humanity from God. He bore our sin in His own body on the cross (1st Peter 2:24). He died the death we deserved and rose from the dead as the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29). There is no other who has done this. There is no other whose sacrifice is sufficient. And therefore there is no other source.

If you are reading this today and have not yet come to Christ, this is your invitation. The record stands: God has given eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever believes in Him will have this life. The door is open. The gift has been provided. The only question remaining is whether you will receive it.

And if you are already a believer, let this truth settle afresh in your heart today. You do not merely believe in eternal life as a future hope. You carry it now, in you, because you have the Son. Walk in the reality of what you have been given.

May the Lord grant us all the grace to live in the fullness of this truth. Amen.

Daily Reflection

What makes 1st John 5:11 so remarkable is its confidence. John does not hedge. He does not say God has made eternal life available as a possibility, or that those who work hard enough at righteousness may eventually attain it. He says God hath given it - past tense, settled, done - and that this life is in His Son. The tense and the grammar of the verse breathe certainty.

This certainty is meant to be the possession of every believer. John's stated purpose in writing his first letter is precisely this: “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). Not that you may hope for it. Not that you may work toward it. That you may know you have it.

There is a significant difference between a believer who hopes they might have eternal life if they are good enough, and a believer who knows they have it because they have the Son. The first lives in quiet anxiety and uncertainty. The second lives in settled assurance and freedom. God's intention for every one of His children is the second of these - a firm, unshakeable knowledge of the life they carry.

Receive that assurance today. You have believed. You have the Son. You have the life.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” (John 6:47)

Prayer Session

Lord Jesus, I come before You today with a heart full of gratitude for the record that stands, the testimony that cannot be overturned: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in You. I thank You that this is not a possibility I am striving toward, but a reality I have been given. I have You, and therefore I have the life.

I thank You for the cross and for the lengths to which You went to make this gift possible. You bore sin that was not Yours. You died a death You did not deserve. You rose in power so that all who believe in You might share in that same resurrection life. There is no greater love than this, and I do not take it lightly.

Father, where there are still pockets of doubt or uncertainty in my heart, especially in places where I am not fully walking in the assurance of the life I have been given, I ask You to bring the light of Your Word into those places today. Let 1st John 5:11 not remain a verse I know but a truth I live from. Let me carry the settled confidence of someone who knows they have the Son and therefore knows they have life.

I also pray today for those who do not yet have this life - family members, friends, colleagues, and neighbours who are still without Christ and therefore still without the life that is only in Him. Draw them, Lord. Open their hearts. Let the record reach them, and let them believe. May they too receive the Son, and in receiving Him, receive life.

In the name of Jesus, who is Himself the life. Amen.
