Walk as Children of Light: Gospel Today Devotional - 22nd October, 2022

In the fifth chapter of the epistle of Paul to the saints at Ephesus, he explains to them the things expected of them as believers in Christ. It opens with the fact that it was expected of them as believers to follow after God as his dear children. 

When a child is adopted into a family, he no longer belongs to the place he was adopted from, right? He begins to bear the name of his new parents, live by their principles, and act in obedience to their instructions.  Do you know why this is necessary? It is because if he decides to live in his new home the way he was living before, things may definitely not go well with him. That is, though he belonged to a family before now, he no longer belongs there but has now been adopted into a new family, and hence, must live according to the dictate of his new family.

The illustration above would help us as believers to understand the statement of Paul to the believers at Ephesus in the verse below,

"For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light". (Ephesians 5:8)

Just like the illustration above, the apostle Paul was telling them that before they came to believe in the Lord, and as a result were saved by his grace, they were darkness (in this case, they were those who lived without the knowledge of Christ) but the case was now different because they were now light (those who in the Lord, are now a reflection of his person).

However, his aim was not to just let them know this truth, but to point them to the last part of that verse of scripture. That though they were now light in the Lord, they were to live(walk) as children of light. That is, they should represent so well the person of Christ by the things they do, the way they live and act.

Dear believer, though we were sometimes darkness (those who lived without the knowledge of Christ), we are now light in the Lord (those who in the Lord are now a reflection of his person); it is expedient that we walk (live, act) as those who truly have come to know the Lord (children of light).

Thoughts for Today: Though you were sometimes darkness, but now you are light in the Lord:walk therefore as children of light.
