That They May Call: Gospel Today Devotional - 5th January, 2024

The Lord's desire for all is that they be saved (John 3:16, 2 Peter 3:9). If it weren't so, he wouldn't have provided a means of escape for man. The fact that Christ was given by him for the redemption of man is a proof that he wants everyone to be saved. The question now is, are all saved? Well, the answer is no. Not all have come to know about the sacrifice that has been made for them. Not all have come to know about God's saving grace, and power, and his will for them to be saved. Not all are saved.

That They May Call: Gospel Today Devotional - 5th January, 2024

Let's say you expect something from a particular person. You expect him to act in a certain way or perhaps do things in a certain way, and never did you at any point tell the person what to do or what you expect from him nor did you tell the person how to do it, yet you expect that he does those things. Let me ask you a question, do you honestly think that the person will do what you think in your heart that he should do?

Today, by the grace of God, we shall be considering something very important, how that as believers, we have our part to play in the salvation of men. The Lord expects that having done his part to redeem man, we are to make known as his children this great news to others as well. I trust that the Lord will speak greatly to our hearts today. The passage of scripture is seen below,

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. [14] How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?"(Romans 10:13,14).

The scripture begins with something very reassuring to all. It shows to us that there's no restriction to who can be saved of the Lord. Anyone who calls on his name will be saved. That's the message he is declaring to all. It doesn't matter what the person has done, neither does it matter where the person is from. If such a person will call on the name of the Lord (believing, and confessing him as Lord, and Saviour), such a person will be saved (will be his). Praise God!

But there's a problem. It is true anyone who calls on his name will be saved, but the question is, how will they call if they do not believe? How will they believe if they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher (someone to talk to them about it)? That they may call, they would have to hear, and believe. This points to us our responsibility as believers, and now we understand why the scripture says to go into the world so as to preach the gospel to every creature, right? Because that is the reason they will call, and he expects them to call that they may be saved. Glory to God!

This is the word of God to you, and I today. That all men be saved, and not perish, he expects that we reach out to them, and as co labourers with him, we are to do our part in making sure that which the Lord desires to see in the life of all men is made possible. The Lord help us all, and grant us sufficient understanding. Amen.

Thought for the day

If they do not hear, they will not believe, and if they do not believe, they will not call and if they do not call on him, they cannot be saved.
