What You Should Seek After: Gospel Today Devotional - 13th January, 2024

May I begin this lesson by asking a question? Suppose you were given two options namely life and death and you asked to pick just one, which would it be? You would most likely pick life, right? I want to believe no one would want to pick death, is there any? That said, another one, suppose you were ask to choose between blessing and cursing, which would you pick? Blessing, right? No one would want to pick the latter, isn't it? This implies that ideally, people would go for options that is in their best interest as no one wants to die and no one wants a curse.

What You Should Seek After: Gospel Today Devotional - 13th January, 2024

Why all these? To point our attention to a very important lesson in our study today. Praise God! If you happen to know that you could have blessings so great with so much peace, joy and comfort, will you not be willing to accept with all joy such a blessing? You will, right? Do you however agree that such a blessing can only come from God alone? If yes, and you're opportune to choose as opposed to the one that comes with sorrow and pain, which would you choose? Let's see the passage of scripture below,

The blessing of the Lord , it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it. (Proverbs 10:22).

The scripture above talks about God first of all being the one who blesses. It says the blessing of the Lord. This implies that there's the blessing which God gives, there's that which comes from the Lord. And this we can say from God's dealings with Abraham as seen below,

"And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing (Genesis 12:2). That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; [18] And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice". (Genesis 22:17, 18). This is that which is called the blessing of the Lord. It is from the Lord. And this is the blessing we are to seek after as believers.

The scripture then tells us what the blessing that comes from God does. It says that it makes rich ( comes in so much abundance and this entails spiritual blessings as well as physical blessings in terms of finances and all).

Another thing is that the Lord adds no sorrow to his blessings meaning that with his blessing comes peace, joy, comfort as compared to that gotten through wicked means. This was that which Abraham enjoyed when God blessed him. And this is that which every believer in Christ Jesus enjoys: the blessing of the Lord without sorrow.

It's a charge to seek the Lord and to seek his ways, to seek his blessing alone and nothing else. Let no man seek for blessing outside God but that every man desires to be blessed of the Lord. The Lord cause his word to dwell in our hearts richly. Amen.

Thought for the Day

God does not just bless. His blessings comes in abundance and he adds no sorrow with it. If you must seek for any blessing, let it be that which the Lord gives.
