THE REASON WE DOUBT
Blessed be the name of the Lord who indeed deserves to be praised. Amen. Having gone through the first and second lessons of this series, we shall consider the third lesson in today's devotional. We have seen how a lack of faith in God can so make us worry or fear.
However, the story of Peter was a different one. He had two issues; fear and doubt. The Scripture talks about the fact that in the fourth watch of the night which from history would mean between the hours of 3 am to 6 am, the disciples of Jesus saw him walking on the sea and were afraid they had seen a ghost. However, Jesus settled their fear by telling them to be of good cheer and that he was the one walking on the sea. There's still more to this story. Let's see the passage of Scripture below,
"And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" (Matthew 14:31).
While he told them he was the one, one of the disciples named Peter dared to ask Jesus for the same privilege to walk on the sea if truly he was the one. He got that same privilege. He was able to walk on the sea just like Jesus but something happened along the way.
What happened? You may want to ask. The wind began to become boisterous that although Peter had started walking on the sea, he became afraid. He got distracted by the wind and took his gaze away from the one who had told him to come and had given him the privilege to do as he did. He became distracted, allowed fear, and began to doubt.
The Lord Jesus was there to save cause Peter began to sink on his way to meet Jesus. In his response, the Lord Jesus said, "Oh thou (ye) of little faith, wherefore didst that doubt?" Peter began to sink because he doubted, and this he did because he got distracted by that which was at the time a true problem but not something Jesus couldn't handle if he had told him to come. What is that situation that allows you to take your gaze off Jesus? What is that thing that makes you doubt God? Focus on Jesus, not the situation. The Lord bless his word in our hearts. Amen.
Daily Nugget: As Christians, we give room for doubt when we become mindful of the situation that troubles us more than we are mindful of the one who has the power to take care of the situation no matter how troubling it may be.
Prayer: Lord, help me never to take my focus away from you.
