One of the ideal things people think that one should do when he is offended is to revenge. This they justify by saying that you do not need to let anyone see you like a fool and that if you decide to do nothing about the situation, you would be taken as one.
The idea then is this, if someone should slap me, I should not hesitate to slap him as well. If I ask someone for something just because I am in need and he refuses to give it to me, I should also not give the person anything that he may need when he comes to ask for my help as well. Is this the ideal way to do things? What does the scripture teach about this? Let's see the passage of scripture below:
"Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee" (Proverbs 20:22).
The word recompense means to reward someone for something done; to reward or thank someone or to pay someone for a loss or suffering. Well, this is not a bad thing to do, is it? We should try as much as we can to thank and reward people and also compensate them as the case may be.
Scripture is not against that but the issue here is that we must not repay evil for evil. It shouldn't be heard amongst us as children of God that we recompense evil for evil. Does that mean that people would not do things to hurt us or take us for granted? They will. But we are not to reward them the same way they have rewarded us, and in this case, with evil. Praise God.
What then should we do if scripture says not to recompense with evil? It says to wait on the Lord. Yes, we are to wait on him to reward them as he deems fit. It is not our responsibility to do so. How God does that, we do not know but we know one thing for sure; he would save us. He would vindicate us. He would come through for us and defend us. This is the ideal thing to do. Vengeance is not yours but the Lord's and he will be the one to repay not you ( Romans 12:19). Dearly beloved, do not go about doing what the Lord has said to leave to him. May this truth dwell richly in your hearts by faith. Amen.
Thought for the day: If you would wait on God and do nothing to avenge yourself for the evil that has been done to you, he will surely save you.
