The Making of the Captain

In the book of 1st Samuel 22:1-2 (NKJV), we see read in scriptures, how King David escaped to the cave of Adullam. Now, when his brothers and all the members of his father's house heard that he had shifted his base to the cave of Adullam, they all went down there to meet him.. Everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And we read that there were about four hundred men with him.

This sets the foundation for my article today and if you're reading this, it's no longer news that you are destined for more. The constant troubles and attacks which you experience may make you wonder what exactly you are doing wrong. Some times, it may feel like you are under a curse because of the numerous challenges that keep coming your way.

The Making of the Captain by Ajayi Taiwo Jesudara - The New Man Movement

If the above description meets your current state as a person, I need you to know that having a great destiny attracts certain challenges and trials. These challenges are not meant to destroy you but to shape you into the person fit to carry out your divine assignment.

You see, being called to greatness doesn't automatically equip you with the character, wisdom, and endurance required to sustain it. Like David, you may have a calling that aligns with the palace, but the opposition you face may make you second-guess yourself or even consider giving up. However, it is in the face of our pain that we develop the capacity to step into our destiny. Until Adullam, David was just David. But after Adullam, the captain in him was born, and through his growth, he helped others discover their strength.

David's journey wasn't just about reaching the throne - it was about being groomed into a leader who was strong yet compassionate. God was not merely trying to place him in a position; He was making him into a person who could sustain that position.

Embracing the Process

The lesson God wants you to learn from your struggles is this: He is not just interested in giving you results; He is more interested in who you are becoming. You may be eager for success, but without the right preparation, success can crush you. When we focus only on results, we risk idolizing them. But when we submit ourselves to the process, the transformation we experience becomes our greatest joy.

Who we become in the journey is more important than the positions we attain. If you are not trained for the kind of room you aspire to enter, you may get there and fail miserably. You may step into the palace but lack the wisdom to function effectively in that environment. That's why the training, though painful, is necessary—it molds you into the kind of person who can thrive in the place God is leading you to.

So, my question to you is this: Are you allowing yourself to be made, or are you simply waiting until you arrive before building the character that fits your calling?

Prayer Points

By the grace of the Lord Jesus, I submit to the process of being made. I do not just focus on occupying positions. I embrace the journey of becoming.
