Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, on 21st January, 2025 celebrated 45 years since he assumed the office of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God
According to a social media post shared by RCCG History on Instagram, the 21st of January, 1981, marked a defining moment in the history of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, as Pastor E. A. Adeboye assumed office as the General Overseer of the great mission, which at the time was comprised of fewer than 40 parishes. Since that historic day, RCCG has grown to become the fastest-growing Pentecostal church in the world, with over 50,000 parishes spread across 197 nations, under the visionary leadership of Pastor E.A. Adeboye.
Speaking about God’s help in the office since his assumption of duties, Pastor Adeboye remarks that many called him a fool for choosing to become a General Overseer. In his words: “When I became the General Overseer, there were several people who believed that I wasn't chosen of God, but God began to show them signs... After some time my enemies said God is behind him.”
“I remember quite a few of my friends who thought I was a fool when I decided to go on full-time ministry. “A lecturer in the university of Lagos! You know how you suffered before you became a lecturer in the university; now you're earning a good salary; you can feed yourself, you can feed your family...; You're a fool". l agreed with them - only that I am a fool for Jesus.”
Pastor Adeboye further said “My Father-in-the-Lord, four others and I went to Tulsa, Oklahoma to attend Kenneth Hagins camp meeting in 1979. We stayed in an hotel, and then one morning my father-in-the-Lord called all of us together in his room and told us that he would soon be leaving and that I would be succeeding him.”
When I became General Overseer, we had 39 parishes, but there were so many problems. I was always so worried about the work of God and though I was just 40 years old, my hair had started to turn grey. I asked God, "Lord, why?" and He said, "You are carrying a burden that is not yours. You cannot share My glory. If you cannot share My glory, you cannot share My burden; I stopped worrying, and my hair gradually turned black again.”
“The first time I saw God performing special miracles through me was at llesha, Osun State of Nigeria. I had just become the General Overseer; ...l was visiting and the woman brought a child that has never spoken in all her life. The child had not spoken a word, she must be about ten years or so of age. I was going to pray, expecting that after I have prayed I would say, "okay, go on believing God, very soon we will see result". But as I said "in the name of Jesus", the girl said "Amen". I nearly jumped out of the window.”
The only time I cried for anything material was when I was leaving my secular job into full-time and I was leaving the mansion I was living in llorin to come and live in Mushin and I said "Lord, please build me a boy's quarter - a room for me, a room for my wife, a room for my children. And He said "Son, don't ask me for a house, I have decided to build you a city, just focus on serving Me, leave the rest to Me"
We celebrate the Grace and faithfulness of God upon the life of our father in the Lord and thank God for this remarkable advancement of His kingdom.
With confidence in Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever, we believe that God will continue to uphold our father in His mercy and grace until the very end.
