How to Walk in the Spirit

Walking in the Spirit is a decision that is personal, yet, beyond man’s conclusion and comprehension. Life in the Spirit is a journey that has no assigned limit, as long the soul lives. However, if life in the Spirit is a journey, then who are those to tread it?
How to Walk in the Spirit

Without an attempt to hold the air in our hands, those who are to tread this journey are the believers. The question now is "How?"

Intimacy and Walking with God does not mean that the devil is uninterested in you or that he has given up on you. the devil may come using things that interest you - relationships, socialization, money, amongst others to invite you for a stroll. When you join him on the stroll, you discover in no time that you have taken more than few yards, a mile, two, four miles until you walk the devil down to hell.

The devil does not chase after those already in his net. He chases to capture, those outside the cage- Christians. The best prayer to pray for this case is that God leads a man to knowing the devices and schemes of the devil and specifically know how to refuse it.

Let us discuss the person of the Spirit, the life in the Spirit, and how to walk in the Spirit. Painfully, the works of the Spirit are limited by our misconceptions and worldly focus.

1. The Person of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a divine person (the last person of the Trinity). He is worthy to receive adoration, love, and faith. If we do not think of the Holy Spirit as a person, then we would continually be limited by his power and divinity, our thoughts would be like Simon’s, who jealously wanted to buy the Holy Spirit, thinking He's an impersonal thing that could be bought.

Act 8:18-20. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the Apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.20. But Peter said unto him, thy money perish with thee because thou hast thought that gift of God may be purchased with money. (KJV)
I wish we understand what Simon saw before concluding on purchasing the Spirit, because nobody would purchase ordinary laying on of hands without essence and gain, actually nobody will. He saw them speaking in tongues and casting away evil spirits, (according to Acts 2:4, 10:44-48) i.e. he saw them manifesting the power within the Name/Personality. From the passage above, it can be unambiguously concluded that the Holy Spirit Is Divine; a gift that can’t be purchased like our lifeless needs and desires. It is a gift that can be acquired through proper repentance, meaning God alone could remedy this situation, and He always will upon proper repentance, which says He (God) is right and I am wrong. It’d be great to affirm this before leaving that for another time, that “God has nothing for sale; everything He has is a “Gift” even His Son [Jn 3:16, Luke 11:13, Eph. 1:13]

John 3:16. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Luke 11:13. If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? [KJV]

Walking in the Spirit, Falana Idowu Zion
If we continually think that that the person of the Holy Spirit is an impersonal power or influence, we’ll constantly think of a way to get hold of the power and use the Holy Spirit, but if we recognize Him as a divine Person who is tender, lovely, peaceful, wise and unlimited in any realm, our thought will always be “How can the Holy Spirit get hold of and use me. You can only get hold or use “something” you can control or stretch to suit your own will. The body of the Holy Spirit is the one that acts and lives within us according to the will of God through Jesus Christ, the Son.

Not until we see the Spirit as a divine person, our thoughts will continually limit the power of the Spirit. Instead of seeking a way to be ready for the Spirit to get more of you, you will be thinking of a plan to get more of Him to consume purposelessly. Also, the Holy Spirit is a Divine being that speaks, teaches, ministers, leads, and makes us ready for the purpose and will of the Father. [Luke 4:1, 1Cor 2: 13]…Undoubtedly, without the Spirit, we're empty and can't fulfill the will of God, the Father.

Luke 4:1. And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.

The Spirit is a being that sees the mind of the Father, and ministers it to His carrier. Conclusively, the Holy Spirit is a personality whose works cannot be overemphasized.

2. Life in the Spirit

As believers who carry the person of the Spirit, the life we live is a Life in the Spirit, and living in the Spirit is the manifestation in the unseen realm even though seen in the human world. In Him we live a life of no condemnation, for He is perfect.

I think it'd be of value to ship in my recent encounter when the thought came into my mind that "Can a Believer be perfect?” as we are living in a flawsome world. At first, the question was shocking and the answer to it was benighted, but in the end, the Spirit made me understand that He is a perfect being, and anybody that carries Him is perfect even though living in a world full of flaws. The Spirit of God (The Holy Spirit) is without blemish and beyond condemnation, He’s perfect, and those who walk after Him are perfect. Romans 8:1.

Romans 8:1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit

The above text makes us understand that the Holy Spirit works exclusively within the legal confines of the finished work of Christ (the death and resurrection); our faith in that finished work, i.e. “the cross” guarantees the help of the Holy Spirit, which guarantees Victory.

Living in the Spirit sets one free from the law (life) of sin and death, i.e. anyone living/walking in the Spirit is not limited by the power of sin which directly or indirectly leads to the law of death. The way the Holy Spirit works through Christ Jesus annihilates the power and effects of Sin and Death. In short, the Spirit gives Victory to His Carrier. Romans 8:2

For the Law of the Spirit (the way the Holy Spirit works) of life in Christ Jesus has made me from (Gives Victory) from the law of Sin and Death.

However, the work of the Spirit is undoubtedly limited by the flesh, nobody walking in the realm of the flesh fulfills the mandates of the Spirit. The Spirit works not in a capacity limited by the law of the flesh. Without tapping into what Jesus did i.e. condemning sin, the Spirit Being cannot and never be embodied.

Romans 8:3. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned Sin in the Flesh.

Jesus has already condemned sin, and as a result, allows the outpour of the Holy Spirit, so there is no condemnation for those living, walking, and dwelling in the realm of the Spirit which is far beyond the realm of sin and death.
Laconically, life in the Spirit is the fulfillment and the manifestation of the Life of Christ, for we are empty without the Holy Spirit.

3. How to Walk in the Spirit.
After understanding the personality of the Holy Spirit and the value of the Life in Him, then, I think it would be of great interest to understand how to walk in this realm and personality to enjoy the power and importance within. God always wants us to walk in this realm, for by this we claim the life of Victory because the Holy Spirit is a Spirit of victory, peace, obedience, hope, etc. By tapping into this God’s will, we overcome the flesh from its controlling power and wishes.
Expressively, here are some steps to help you understand how to walk in the Spirit.

1. Lay aside all Weight

In Hebrews 12:1, we read that since "we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us." From this scripture, it is evident that putting off the flesh and laying aside all weight is the first step to living in the Spirit. The Flesh is an equal counterpart of the Spirit and without laying aside the weights (sins) that awaken the flesh, the Spirit is limited. Laying aside the weights can be done as we understand that all things come to us through the cross and that the cross must ever be the object of our faith, which then gives the Holy Spirit latitude to work within our lives. In short, the weights we are to lay aside are the things that are not in line with the Word of God. Gal. 5:19. We lay aside these weights by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the Author, and the Finisher of our Faith. Heb.12:2…we lay aside these weights by allowing the things of the world to be of no importance to us and rating higher the things of the Spirit with great importance. Present yourself as a living sacrifice, renewing your mind with the things of the Spirit. Romans 12:1-2

2. Submitting yourself/time to Things of the Spirit-Continually Sow to the Things of the Spirit.

Gal.6:8. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life Everlasting.

Without flying to the sky without purpose, how do we sow to the things of the Spirit? We simply sow to the things of the Spirit by studying the life Christ which is the Word of God. We grow in Spirit each time we devote our time to study the Word of Life (God), by this, the Spirit continues to grow. If you don’t give God time, the world will surely overwhelm your heart. Prioritize the Word of God; make it your priority, give it your time, by this, you become a giant in the Spirit.

3. Obey God's Leading

Doing the Things of the Spirit (Living Beyond the Flesh) Romans 8:5. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh, but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Gal 5:22-23 But the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, Faith
23. Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Lastly, we need to continually hear the Spirit and follow after His will, the Spirit speaks to you every time, don’t be carried away by the things of the world, and be deliberate in obeying His leadings. Raise not your problem above the Spirit, the Spirit is the solution. It is a pity, we are in a world that focuses too much on the Problem and neglects the Solution. Everything God tells you is of great importance, it is good…do it. If we live to obey the leadings of the Spirit, our lives will be fond of the Spirit. By obeying the Spirit, we’ll be fond of the things of the Spirit. We pray in the Spirit, we seek solutions in the Spirit, we dialogue in the Spirit, and above all, we dwell in the Spirit realm.

We know that we live in a world that is turning away from the things of the Lord - but you as a believer can choose to live to suit the ways of God through the help of His Spirit within you. As mentioned earlier, walking in the Spirit is a personal decision - like the way you can decide to eat when feeling hungry. You choose to live in God, nobody decides for you. As we go in the process of enjoying life, never forget that the Life of God is a life that leads to eternity…It is a life of peace on earth and victory to Heaven. Choose to live and walk in the Spirit.
