5 Steps to Growing as a Young Christian

It is with great joy to welcome you to Christianity, but at the same time it is greater joy to remain in God and grow as a believer. Christianity is a race, that we must run - and not just run but finish successfully.

One thing to know is the fact that as a christian being born again does not mean that you can do just anything and the grace of God will speak or cover up for you. The grace and life you have received at salvation is not a license to commit sin. When you receive Jesus Christ as our lord and personal savior, you need to walk in him, building yourself daily in faith and trust in Christ. It is only then that true growth can be recorded.

Daily growth in Jesus Christ is what we need. God's word in Colossians 2:6-7 aptly confirms this where Scriptures says, "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving."

"As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord" talks about the first step before being a christian -'Christlike'. This is the point where we receive Jesus as saviour. We are further instructed to "walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in faith. This process involves reading and listening to God's word, praying and sharing the gospel amongst others. Listening to God's word so that you can helps us to be strengthened in the faith as the Bible says faith comes by hearing, and hearing the word of God.

The verse further says "as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving". Here, it absolutely means that we grow in the line of Christ's teaching throuh His word and through teachers in the body of Christ who have gone ahead in encounters and tangible experiences while seeking God. Then you can abound yourself with thanksgiving, giving thanks to him all day for his salvation that he has given to us.

Steps to Grow as a Young Christian

Christianity is a life to live as Jesus Christ rightly puts it in John 10:10, saying "the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." If you have received Jesus Christ, the promise in that verse is for you. You will have life abundantly, you will not die nor fall sick - and not only that, but life in abundance. It is ths your responsibility to live the life of Christ. You can do this by growing in grace as 2 Peter 3:18 puts it saying, "but grow in grace and in the knowledge of our lord Jesus Christ."

How then can we grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ?

1. Reading his word" the Bible"

We must constantly create room in our hearts for the word of God to grow and that is what the Bible does for you.

2. Cultivating good christian friends

You cannot replace the value of good friendships in your life as a believer

3. Obey the will of God

God gives simple, strange and sometimes, difficult instructions

4. Understand that you have spiritual foes

As a new and young christian, you need to know that your flesh will be used against you to ensure that you drop out of God. The devil uses this against you to destroy your relationship with Christ. Young believers must learn to stand in strong faith, and be rooted in the word of God.

5. Join a Growing Community of Believers

In the words of Reverend David Ogbueli, when God wants to bless you, he brings people into your life. You should be able to discern them. At the same time, when the devil wants to destroy you, he brings people into your life - you should be able to spot and seive them.
