The Excelling Man

Excellence is a virtue. It is commonly referred to as a state of having a superior and exceptional quality compared to a set of people, groups or personalities. When an individual excels, it is said that such person has greatly succeeded.

How to build an excellent lifestyle as a believer

As His children, God wants us to excel in all we do. The spirit of excellence comes hand in hand with success. He has blessed the works of our hands and so, we are expected to succeed. An excellent man is a blessed man. Psalm 1:3 rightly describes excellence using simile and comparing to a tree. he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper."

How do we know God wants us to be excellent?

Our answer to this inquiry can be found in the book of Daniel 6:3

"Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit [was] in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm."

Daniel, who was a slave was preferred above the citizens of a nation like Babylon. This shows that wherever we may find ourselves, God wants us to succeed without excuses. The spirit of excellence works closely with the Holy Spirit and the result this commands is supernatural (similar to what happened to Daniel). The spirit of excellence confers a dignity that will make one totally exceptional and preferred from his peers. It does not strive to shine in a place of competition. Also, God's thought towards us are of good and not of evil to give us a future and a hope. God's desire for you to be excellent is a strong one because you are an extension of Him and as such, your excellence represents Him too.

What are the Qualities of an Excellent Man?

You might muse to yourself, asking, "How do I know an excellent man?" or "how do I know I am excellent?" The Bible gives us our answer in the book of proverbs 22:29, saying  "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean [men].

  • An excellent man does not find it hard to adapt to situations or duties given. He is ready to work, ready to be corrected and ready to accept corrections.
  • An excellent man does not relent when he is complimented. This is really a common habit amongst the lay-men, once complimented, they relent, but a person with the mindset of excellence does much more.

  • An embodiment of excellence will not shirk off all forms of responsibility in the ministry to God,he will follow the leadings of the Holy Spirit without complaints or grumbling.

  • Lastly, a mindset of excellence is respected everywhere and among nations. The gospel is respected wherever you bring it when you do all things with the touch of excellence.

How to be an Excellent Person

Having learnt what it is to be excellent, how do we move to that threshold of excellence? How can we become diligent and build a culture of excellence in all we do?

An encompassing response to this question will be scripture's stand point in the book of Colossians 3:23 - 24

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

When your mind is trained like this, you do more even when there is no appreciation,it becomes etched within you and there, you become successful.

What happens if you fail to build an Excellent Disposition?

Failure to have an excellent mindset will only result in rejection which will birth regrets on your own part just like the servant in Matthew  25:24-30. No matter how small the assignment in your hands are, do it with all your strength and in all your best. Your reward is with your father who sees in secret and answers in the open. Soon, nations will go ahead and bow to you because of the excellence in all you do.
