The Principle of Focus in a Believer's Lifestyle

Many verses in the Bible talk about the subject of focus. One profound verse is Philippians 3:13 which aptly says "...but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before". The Message translation puts it as "pressing towards the goal."

If you are given a gun to aim at a fierce lion which obviously wants to hurt you, your best choice will be to aim with all your might and with great focus. This is because any miss will make you a prey. In the same way, focus is an exceptional quality that is necessary for success. Anyone who intends to make a head way in life, ministry, academics or any sphere of life must have a strong focus on the target. Jesus is also a perfect example of good focus as John 4:34 says "My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work." Jesus further proved the need for focus in John 9:4 where He says, "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work..."

John 18:37, Matthew 26:24

Having focus simply means that you are not fishing in the wrong waters. It also means that you are defining your priorities and positioning towards the attainment of a certain goal. Focus again, can be described to be the absence of distraction, fear and uncertainty.

An African proverb says "if you chase two rats, you will catch none". This is just how it is with focus. Focus requires a depth of concentration, vision and dedication to a cause. Anyone without proper focus in the journey of life will definitely be a victim of epileptic success. A person without focus is like someone who buys spectacles withou5 eyes. God has a plan and vision for your life, but your focus will keep and direct you towards its fulfillment.

A life without focus is a bomb waiting to explode and an accident waiting to happen. Such life will be swerved by every wind of doctrine, ideology and school of thought. Everythjing will look true and all ways will look right to you.

How to Maintain Focus as a Believer

  • Know your God.

As a believer, you cannot be focused on nothing. This is why it is necessary to seek and know your God. Seeking God's face will help you to discover His purpose for your life and then focus on His purpose for your life. The absence of the knowledge of God''s purpose in one's life will cause such individual to keep chasing shadows because there will be no focus. On the other hand, direction and clarity will work hand in hand with focus once you can define your purpose in God. This practically confirms God's word in Matthew 26:24 saying "...the son of man goes as it is written of Him."

  • Know your Distraction (the enemy)

Minimise your weaknesses and deal with them.

  • Desire to be the best that God can make you.

Have a rugged determination to be the best. Work at improving yourself everyday and do not quit because of setbacks.

  • Concentrate on your strengths and develop them.

Form a habit of going out of your way to be the best in what you do.
