Give Attention: Gospel Today Devotional - 29th August, 2022

When you do not pay attention to things, you will find it difficult to understand what instruction has been given, what thing has been said, and what lesson has been taught. This is the reason many times when someone is sent on errand, he comes back asking what he was sent to do. This makes you wonder where he was or what he was doing while you were speaking. The truth is that he wasn't giving attention to what was said or he didn't give attention. Until we learn to give attention to things, we may not really get the best out of things that should influence us so greatly and may even end up endangering our lives in the process. Praise God.

Someone may live in a place for years and never know that there's a boutique close by, and each time he wants to get a shirt for instance, he travels very far to get the shirt he wants. The thing is while it may be that he is in that environment, he pays no attention to the things in his environment even though he has been there for a very long time. Not paying attention to things is the reason many students fail, and the same reason people do not receive the best from God's word. It is the reason many sustain fatal accidents whether at home or outside the home. We just must learn to pay attention to things most especially when it comes to the word of God.

This is that which today's lesson will be centered upon; how that as believers, it is necessary that we not only say we know the word of God, but that we give attention to it. This is that which the scripture instructs us to do, that we attend to the word of God, and that we incline our ears to his sayings. I trust that the Lord grants us understanding in Jesus' name. Amen. Let's see the passage of scripture below,

"My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. [21] Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. [22] For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh." (Proverbs 4:20-22).

Look at what the instructs, just as a father admonishes his son, the word of God says to attend to the words of God (he being our Father and we being his children). This means that we are to give attention to his words; we are to through prayer, and study give attention to his words. We are to take every detail to heart, meditate on it, live by it, and act on it. We give attention it, we attend to it; it must be deliberate, intentional, with the whole of us. The words of God as contained in scripture must be attended to for in it do we get to discover his mind for us.

Look at what the instruct again, that we are to incline our ears unto his sayings (his words), we are not to let them (his words) depart from our eyes; and that we are to keep them in the midst of our hearts. This means that the word of God we hear (through messages), we see (through personal study must not just be left that way, we must put them in the midst of our hearts as though you have to open your heart and put it in there). Praise God! This is what it means to attend to his words.

The scripture then says to us why we have to do this, it says that attending to the words of God or giving attention to his words will be life to those who find them (those who have come to understand his words, and known them to be true), and health to their flesh. This implies that attending to the word of God; inclining our ears to it, and fixing our eyes on it gives to us life ( an ever unending sense of purpose and fulfilment in God) and health (nourishment to man; spirit, soul and body) to all our flesh. The Lord help us to give attention to his words even as we have been instructed to do in Jesus' name. Amen.

Thought for the day:

To give attention to God's words, you must consciously incline your ways to his sayings, fix your eyes steadfastly on it, and keep the words right in the midst of your heart.
