Doing as He Instructs: Gospel Today Devotional - 27th November, 2023

Instructions are very necessary to getting anything done. Take for instance, if the home needs to be cleaned, and it seems urgent, that which would be done will be for either your mum or your dad to give you the instruction to clean whatsoever part of the house that needs to be cleaned. It will remain that way, that is uncleaned, if no ones talks about or asks you to do it.

Doing as He Instructs: Gospel Today Devotional - 27th November, 2023

One thing is getting the instruction, another thing is yielding to it. You can be instructed to do something, and not do it but that which makes an instruction relevant is not the giving of the instruction but the obedience or yielding to whatever instruction has been given. And it is important that when we are told to do something by either our parent, and others, provided that the instructions are ethically correct, we are to obey. Praise God.

The Lord has been gracious to us, having taken us through series of studies, and blessing us equally as well. Today, by his grace, we shall consider something very important, and how it applies to our lives as believers, and that which the Lord expects of us. The passage of scripture under consideration is seen below,

"And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. [27] And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, [29] Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. [30] And Philip ran thither to him , and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?" (Acts 8:26-27; 29-30).

Here, we see Philip, how that the angel of the Lord instructed him. I would like you to pay attention. In verse 26, the angel of the Lord instructed him, that he should arise, and in verse 27, we see the response of Philip, how the scripture said he arose. In verse 29, we see again how the Spirit of the Lord instructed Philip to go near, and in verse 30, the scripture says that he ran thither to him. Something very important should be noted from this passage, the fact that at every point in time that Philip was given an instruction, he obeyed. Praise God.

He didn't try to resist the voice, neither did he doubt whatever instruction he was given. This explains to us as well that Philip knew, and could discern very well the voice of the Lord such that at every point in time when he heard the voice, or was given the instruction, he knew who was speaking, and what was expected of him. But that which I want us to really take note of was his obedience to all instruction that was given. He was prompt in obeying all the instructions given to him, and never at any point in time did he refuse to do that which was instructed of him.

Little wonder the Lord worked through him mightily. This is to tell us as believers that more than we desire the instructions of the Lord, which of course is a noble desire, we should seek more to obey the instructions he gives. It is not the giving of the instruction that matters but our response to it. God will always remain faithful in giving out his instructions but would we be faithful enough to obey the instructions he gives? May we at all times find grace to do as he instructs. Amen.

Thought for the day: God is ever faithful to give out his instructions, but will you be faithful to obey his instructions?.
