Knowing God as Provider: Gospel Today Devotional - 25th December, 2023

KNOWING GOD SERIES

The Lord had promised to give Abraham a son. This promise came when Abraham was 75 years old but for 25 years after the promise came, Abraham still lived without a child. Although he had one through Hagar, the maidservant of his wife, Sarah, it wasn't the child the Lord promised him, and through who the Lord has said he was going to bless him. We have learnt through this series that God's word does not fail, and he does not lie, right? And here we see those traits in full expression because just as God promised, Abraham had a son. Glory to God. God is faithful to his word.

Knowing God as Provider: Gospel Today Devotional - 25th December, 2023

It only happened that after Abraham had received this promise, the Lord made a very great demand from Abraham, and what was that? He told Abraham to sacrifice his son whom he had waited for such a long time to get. If you were the one, what would you have done? You would have doubted if it even was God's voice you heard, right? Most persons will even justify their points by saying, "God cannot say this. He is not wicked. How can he promise me something, made me to wait for so long before giving me, and then ask for it again?". The one thing many forget is the fact that the child wasn't Abraham's, it was the Lord's. This was how Abraham saw it. And that if God had given him this one, even if he took it, he would give him another one, why would someone think like this?

It was because Abraham knew God as Provider. He knew that God could give to him that which he needed. It was the provision of God that made way for him to have Isaac as his son. He knew even if he sacrificed his son, God will make a way, and give him another. He knew God will provide. This is that which we seek to learn about God today. The fact that God is Provider. The passages under consideration are seen below,

"And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen" (Genesis 22:14). "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want" (Psalm 23:1). "The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing" (Psalm 34:10).

Still on the story of Abraham, he didn't disobey. He did even as the Lord had said to him. He didn't even doubt if it was God's voice or not. He didn't have that time to argue it. He just wanted to obey. How could a man be so willing to sacrifice his son? It was because this man knew God as Provider. Although he was willing to sacrifice his son, he was working the consciousness of the fact that God would provide. Little wonder when Isaac said to him that they had all for the sacrifice except the lamb, did you notice what Abraham said (Genesis 22:8)? He said God would provide for himself a lamb for the sacrifice? Somehow, he had this confidence that he would not have to sacrifice his son, and even if he did, God could still give him another or bring Isaac back to life.

This was because the man Abraham saw God as Provider and related with him as such. Do you know God as Provider? Of a truth, the Lord provided a lamb for the sacrifice as Abraham had said. Mind you, he didn't do any guess work. He was sure God would provide. Little wonder when he had sacrificed the lamb provided by God in place of his son, he called the place Jehovah Jireh meaning God will provide. Abraham knew God as Provider. Do you know God as Provider? Do you know that he is your Shepherd, and that you will not want? Do you know that they who trust him shall not lack any good thing?

Why? Simply because God is Provider and it is against his nature to do otherwise. God will provide not because you force him to, not because he seeks to please you, but because that is who he is. God is Provider. In that situation, trust him. Do you seek resources either financial, human, material for that project, for that business, for your church, your school, your family? Do trust him, and have this belief that no matter what, God will provide. God is Provider. May this words dwell richly in your hearts. Amen.

Thought for the day: When you know God as Provider, you will be rest assured that no matter what, God will surely provide.
