Burning Altars by Akinjobi Oluwagbemisola Temitope

Burning Altars by Akinjobi Oluwagbemisola Temitope

Leviticus 6:12, "And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings." (KJV)

God gave this instruction to the children of Israel during their journey to the promised Land. This particular offering process was referred to as the burnt offering. Upon this burnt offering was the fat of the peace offering burnt. The burning of the peace offering upon the burnt offering bought them their peace temporarily. It was not portraying the perfect peace God wanted for humanity completely.

God wanted a permanent form of peace to His children so He came up with a master plan The plan of salvation. But this plan needed time to be accomplished, it needed the children of Israel and the world generally to be prepared to accommodate this plan. Therefore, He sent His prophets who spoke about the arrival of this master plan in order to get the world prepared. One of those prophets He sent directly proclaimed the fact that God's master plan was coming to replace the need to burn rams and goats to attain peace.

Isaiah 53:5, "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." (KJV)

When it was almost time for the plan to come into fruition, God sent a fore-runner ahead named John; the man, John, lived in the desert preaching and baptising with water but humanity had not received the perfect peace for them yet.

The man Jesus Christ was born and He walked with full authority on Earth yet, humanity did not attain the peace enough to keep their altars burning forever. They still needed to sacrifice rams and goats. This went on until that night of passion when Christ gave Himself up to be arrested, interrogated and crucified like a criminal. He died and was buried by a kingdom financier named Joseph from Arimathea.

Humanity had no hope anymore! They kept asking themselves if God had forgotten about His promise of peace or if He was tired of them until that fateful morning three days after Jesus Christ was buried; Jesus Christ had risen!

But he did not just rise, he rose as a triumphant Lord in that He had taken the place of our rams and sheep and descended into the darkest part of hell, He had fought with the powers of darkness and won valiantly as seen in Colossians 2:15, "And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it." (KJV) He had become our very own high priest who could be sacrificed as well! Hebrews 7:27, "Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself." (KJV)

However, humanity still had a responsibility to cover and that was the simple duty of believing in this work of salvation, bringing other human beings into the light of this peace and ensuring that the intensity of the sacrifice made for us does not dwindle. Our human body became the altar and the Holy Spirit, God's gift whom we received when we got saved became the fire that must not go out. We were given the assignment to keep our altars burning. 2 Timothy 1:6, "That is why I would remind you to stir up (rekindle the embers of, fan the flame of, and keep burning) the [gracious] gift of God, [the inner fire] that is in you by means of the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination]." (AMP)

3 Ways to Keep Your Altar Burning.

1. PRAYING.

This was one of the mandates Jesus Christ gave the believer when He walked the Earth. Luke 11:24, "And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint" (KJV) When we pray, especially when we pray in the spirit, we are able to pray out the perfect will of God every time. Our prayers achieve more than we could ever imagine in building us up and in ensuring our comfort while on Earth.

2. FASTING.

This means the deliberate action of putting the body under and subjecting it to our spirit by depriving the body of certain delicacies which may be food, wine, places or certain activities. Fasting heightens the level of manifestation of the spirit of God and this is another important way to keep our being on fire for God. Acts 13:2, "As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them." (KJV) Believers should also note that we can hear God at a higher frequency when we fast.

3. MEDITATION AND BIBLE STUDY.

Meditation means to mutter, to ponder and to ruminate upon an issue. When we read the Bible and take time out to mutter the words or declare them out loud, it automatically becomes a part of us. We are then able to see ourselves in the light of God's word. Our spirit man is fully equipped to battle situations triggered by the environment or the devil with the word of God. Bible study and meditation helps us not to sink easily when life's oceans roar at us.

Like a student who cannot expect to pass an examination without reading once, as believers, we are not expected to take spiritual things casually but instead, keep them near our hearts so that our spirit may be fervent and in sync with God at all times. Our altars should be kept burning in every situation. We should never be too busy to keep our altars red-hot. Fervency at the things of God should be our watchword. Romans 12:11, "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord" (KJV).

I like the part of prayer and fasting because even at the moment it resonates a lot with me.
For me, especially in this season of Lent, it is necessary to keep my alter on fire for God, and Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving is the main pillar that I hold unto.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful one with the world
