The month of April is gradually coming to end, isn't it? That's very true and thus far, each day has been a blessing to us as we have considered lessons that have blessed our lives in no small way. Hallelujah! It is my prayer that for the remaining days in the month, including today, God will keep revealing himself through his word to us. Praise God. We are still considering the book of 1 John chapter two, and we shall be continuing from where we stopped yesterday.
One of the proofs that you love your parents for example and respect them as well lies in the fact that you obey their instructions. If that which you derive pleasure in is to disobey your parents or refuse to carry out their instructions is a proof that you most likely do not love them nor respect them enough as you claim. You don't even need to argue this cause if you truly love them, then you will be glad to do whatever they ask you to do. Glory to God.
Similar, the proof that you love God is that you keep his commandments. To put it in another way, the proof that you know God, not just having a knowledge of who he is but fellowshipping with him is that you keep his commandments. This I suppose is that which the apostle seeks to explain to us; a knowing that is birthed out of fellowship with him in prayer and study of his word. Glory to God. Let's see the passage of scripture below,
"And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. [4] He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. [5] But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. [6] He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked" (1 John 2:3-6).
You cannot claim that you know him (God) if you consistently refuse to keep his commandments. He that keeps his commandments is one who as a result of fellowship has come to know him, that is, what he wants, how he wants you to do them, not only that, but also doing by his grace what he wants you to do. It says, "And hereby we do know that we know him" which in other words may mean that this is the proof that we know him if only we keep his commandments. However, if we refuse to keep his commandments, it means that we do not know him. Hallelujah.
"He that saith, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him", isn't this the truth? You cannot claim to know the Lord by the reason of fellowship with him in prayer and study and say that you do not know what his commandments are, not just that, but that you cannot also refuse to obey them after knowing if you truly have fellowship with the Lord. In this context, we are considering the word know not just as a mere knowledge of God but fellowship with him . This means that we cannot claim to be intimate with God and not obey him, else, we lie and the truth is not in us. Do you know the Lord? Is his love perfected in you?
If yes, how do you know for sure that his love is perfected in you? It says in verse 5 that anyone who keeps his word, that is, obeys the commandments of God, in that same person is the love of God perfected. Truly, you have been consumed with his love and his love has found full expression in you if you indeed obey his commandments and this is a proof that you know him. Praise God. Finally, in verse 6, if says that the person who abides in God is supposed to walk, even as he walked. Do you claim to abide in him? If yes, are you walking as he walked? Are you showing forth his nature by your life? Do you obey his commandments? The Lord bless his word in our hearts. Amen.
Thought for the day: The proof that you know God by the reason of fellowship with him in prayer and study is that you do that which he commands you through his word to do, else, you're a liar and the truth is not in you.
