It was another year for students in high school to begin to make their way into college. This time around, it was however different as the requirement for getting into college was a bit demanding. Prior to this time, students had prepared their minds to just read and then sit for the exams.
The colleges were however unwilling to do that as they had to change the mode through which they offered admission to students. Many who had good grades couldn't make the list because the requirement that year had to do with their ability to handle and proffer solutions immediately.
One thing to learn from here is this, that while the students thought their grades would qualify them for the admission, the mode of assessment was however different as that didn't meet with the requirements given by their colleges.
This brief illustration though hypothetical is to show us something from the scripture, something we ought to know and bear in mind as believers. It is seen in the scripture below,
"The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts." (Proverbs 17:3)
In our dealings with God, and in his dealings with us, we have to understand that he weighs our hearts, and in this case, particularly the motive behind our actions. Our motive matters a lot, and we must at all times bear this in mind that more than we do desire to do things, the motive should be right.
The scripture here relates this with gold, and silver. While the finning pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, and that these are the ways these two are tried (refined) but the Lord refines or weighs the heart.
Another thing to learn from the passage as it can be applied to believers is the fact that God refines the heart such that our motives are in alignment with his commands, and that is seen in our actions. He works in our hearts that we may produce good works, and become refined vessels for him.
It is however my prayer today that the workings of the Lord becomes evident in our lives of a truth, and that our desire to do things is backed up by the right motive.
Thought for the day
Although the fining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, God tries the heart.
