When one meets a person for the first time and is given the opportunity to talk with the person, he or she may get to find out who exactly the person is from such discussion. His values, and ideas about life would be known whether or not he is a person who values life, commitment, etc.
Just by talking to a person, it is possible to know what he or she believes, and what he or she stands for. This therefore is to state that words could serve as a proof of someone's personality which may comprise his beliefs, values, etc.
The apostle Paul in the first Chapter of his epistle to the Philippians said something that we would be looking into shortly. This he said to exhort, and to ensure that as believers, they through their way of life show that they are of a truth. Let's see the statement in the verse of scripture below,
"Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel." (Philippians 1:27).
Having stated that through conversations, people may get to know who we are, what we believe, and what we value, it can be seen clearly from the scripture above that the words of the apostle Paul agrees with this as well. I also at the same time believe that as it was applicable to them then, it is also applicable to us now because whatsoever was written before now was written for our learning.
The apostle Paul addresses two things in the text above, the first dealing with the conversation of believers, and the second dealing with unity. He said this perhaps to remind them of the fact that through their conversations, people can assess you, and then to exhort them to speak in such a way that it will reveal to people the gospel of Jesus Christ (that their conversations should be in line with what his word says).
Then he addresses the issue of unity, that they should stand fast (holding on to the faith without letting go) as one, labouring together for the faith of the gospel they have believed. In other words, they were to be united.
The Lord through his word as well seeks to reveal these things to us, first that our conversations be that which is consistent with the gospel of Christ, and that as believers, we are to strive for the faith we have believed as one without any form of segregation. This to us is the exhortation of the Lord today. I pray that these things sink deep into our hearts, and that we live by them. Amen.
Thought for the day: Our conversations should be as those who have known Christ indeed, and that we hold on to that which we have believed together as one. Godly conversations, and togetherness should describe us as believers.
