The One Whose Name we will Remember: Gospel Today Devotional - 23rd May, 2022

They had all prepared for the annual relay race. Some came from very far countries to take part in the race. It was indeed a season of fear as many were up against some of the most experienced athletes. The defending champion was in the race as well alongside the individual champions from other countries. Some who were running for the first time had no intention to win since they were up against some of the finest athletes.

However, Mike, a very determined young man who was also running for the first time came into the race with a different source of energy. He knew he was up against the best but that didn't discourage him. This he said, "I know they are very experienced, and on my own, I would not be able to win the race. They may rely on their experiences, but I have come in the name of the Lord, and would remember his name, and he would help me". Everyone was astonished as this young man became the winner of the race.

The Psalmist paints a picture in one of the Psalms in scripture; a picture of trust and remembrance of the one whose name is mighty: the Lord Jehovah. The text is seen below,

"Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God".(Psalm 20:7).

Just like the hypothetical story above, many people seem to forget the fact that it is not in their ability, preparedness, skill or experience, age, etc, that victory is secured, and sustained. No, not at all. It is is in the ability, power, and name of the one who is able to give victory.

Many times, people get to think that they can do things on their own without the help of God but end up realising that it is never so because self effort can be disappointing.

Mike in our story understood this, as well as the Psalmist. As believers, it is important that we understand this too. That while others may decide to put their trust, and confidence in self or any other aside God, we should know for sure whom we have believed, and trust him completely for help.

Listen to what the Psalmist said, some trust in chariots, and horses( I know that there are some who believe, and rely on things other than you: their wealth, possessions, skills, influence): but we will remember the name of the Lord our God ( it doesn't matter to me who they trust, as for me, I know your name alone can save, and I will trust you). Why would anyone say this? The answer is this: "The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord" ( Proverbs 21:31). May we by the grace of God do, and at all times remember the name of the Lord our God. Amen.

Thought for the day: Except God helps you, you cannot help yourself. While others may trust in sources other than God, you are to remember his name alone cause God alone is mighty to save.
