As humans, we cannot stop our minds from thinking certain things, but we can surely decide what to allow to stay in our hearts as we must not give room for everything that comes in.
If you decide to have a wedding party, for example, you can decide who you want to see by just giving out invites to them such that those who do not come without any invite do not get a chance to attend the wedding.
The same thing we are to do to our thoughts. We cannot allow things that do not align with the word of God in our hearts. What thoughts do we allow then? Let's see the passage of Scripture below,
"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8).
The Apostle Paul in his epistle to the saints in Philippi gives to them a charge that I believe is still very much applicable to us. This tells us what thoughts to allow and also how to assess our thoughts.
Are the thoughts true? Then allow them. Are they honest? Then allow them. Are they just, pure, lovely, and of a good report? Then allow them. Is there any virtue in the thought? Is there anything in it that is praiseworthy? If yes, then you should allow it.
It says if the thoughts that come to your heart meet these criteria, you should think about them. If they do not, you should not allow them at all. This is the way to assess your thoughts as a believer and it is also a clear explanation of what thought to allow. The Lord bless his word in our hearts. Amen.
Daily Nugget: You are to allow thoughts that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, of virtue and praise. Nothing aside these should occupy your heart.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to only allow thoughts that are consistent with your word in my heart. In Jesus' name. Amen.
