It is recorded in scripture that our Lord Jesus when he addressed the people, spoke to them in parables. Through this, he was able to use certain things known to them to communicate his message to the people. He talked about the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the sower, etc. These were stories through which the Lord Jesus taught the people things about the kingdom of God.
Today, however, we shall be focusing our attention on the parable of the sower. The Lord Jesus talked to the people about the sower who went out to sow, the things that occurred in the process as some fell by the way, some on thorns, and some on fertile ground, and in the end the result of those occurrences. The disciples after hearing this sought that the Lord explained it to them, and he did. The explanation to the parable is that which we will be looking at in today's devotional, and it is seen in the passage below:
"When anyone heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the wayside. [20] But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; [21] Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. [22] He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. [23] But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty". (Matthew 13:19-23).
After they asked Jesus to explain to them, he began by telling them plainly what the parable implied. We need to understand that the parable itself addresses four categories of persons. First are those who hear the word, and do not understand (by the wayside). This points to us the need to not just hear the word but seek understanding that it may profit us. The second category comprises those who hear the word, and for a short time receive it, but have no sustaining power to keep the word. This is to point our attention to the fact that we need to keep the word, not for a while but let it abide in us evermore.
The third category is those who hear the word but allow other things to gain preeminence over the word in their lives. As well, we are to let the word of God alone in our lives, and nothing else. Finally, those who allowed the word to dwell in them, who hid the word in their hearts, and bore fruit worthy of their profession.
Dear believer, each time the word comes to you, it is expected that you hear, receive with gladness, and let it abide in you still, that it may yield forth fruit worthy of your profession.
Daily Nugget: Let the word of God you hear daily dwell richly in your heart that it may bring forth fruit worthy of a believer.
Prayer: Lord, let your word dwell richly in my heart that I may bear fruit worthy of a believer.
