Ask and Ye Shall Receive: Gospel Today Devotional - 28th September, 2022

Mike had always wanted a bike for himself; something that would aid his movement to school. He had seen other friends come to school with their bikes as well and admired them. However, he was unable to get a bike though he desired one.

Ask and Ye Shall Receive: Gospel Today Devotional - 28th September, 2022

One morning, he summoned the courage to ask his dad. Walking to his dad, he said, " I have been walking to school ever since, and most of my friends come to school with their bikes and do not have to stress themselves. Aren't you concerned about that, dad? The dad replied, " Well, that's not my fault. I thought you were cool with it. Besides, you refused to ask until now; ask me whenever you need anything, and I'll give it to you. Now that you have asked, I promise to get you the bike next week".

This is to help understand the focus of today's devotional. The Bible is replete with many exhortations on prayer. However, for today, we'll be considering the verse of scripture below,

"Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full."(John 16:24).

Just like the hypothetical story above, it is important to note that believers are also encouraged to pray because it is through prayers we even get to make requests.

Jesus speaking here first points our attention to a lack of request or better put, a lack of prayer. Hitherto ( before this time or up till now), you have refused to ask anything in my name, but now I exhort you to ask(pray, request in prayer) in my name, and I will give to you that your joy may be full.

He says the reason we have not received is that up till now we have not asked, and though he knows our needs for so the scripture says (Matthew 6:32), he still gives to us an admonition to ask; and then he says we should ask beginning now, and that if we ask, we'll receive to the end that we may glory in him (our joy being full).

Dear believer, the Lord says to ask, and ye shall receive that your joy may be full. Do not tarry any longer in asking. The Lord help us all. Amen.

Daily Nugget: Though you have refused to ask before now, the Lord says to begin to ask, and that certainly you will receive, and your joy will be full.

Prayer: Lord, I am sorry I have been too troubled that I have forgotten to ask of you in prayer. Help me to ask, and to do so in faith for I believe you will do even as you have said. Amen.
