Do You Thank The Lord?: Gospel Today Devotional - 10th September, 2022

It is indeed a great privilege for believers to have such a book as the Holy Bible. It is indeed sufficient for the believer's faith and practice. We have been studying the book of 1 Samuel ever since, and have learned quite a lot from Hannah as a woman. This woman has shown us what it means to ask something from God in prayer, and give that same thing back to God due to a vow she made. We can say that Hannah is indeed a woman of her word.

Do You Thank The Lord?: Gospel Today Devotional - 10th September, 2022

The second chapter would be our main focus today as it still centers around Hannah but more than we would talk about her, we would talk more about God and why we have to thank him as revealed in Hannah's praise. Let's see the passage of scripture below,

"And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine horn is exalted in the Lord : my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. [2] There is none holy as the Lord : for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. [3] Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed". ( 1 Samuel 2:1-3)

Hannah was not just a woman who remembered to keep her promise to God, but she was also a woman who knew how to give thanks to God for the things he did. Perhaps the birth of her first child Samuel remained a wonder to her, and for this, she was grateful to God even if she had to give the child back to God as she promised. Let's look at some of the things embedded in Hannah's praise to God.

First, she rejoiced in the salvation of God ( not as one being born again, but in this case, saving her from the shame of being barren and the humiliation she faced in the hands of Peninnah). How many times do we thank the Lord for the things he does for us? Do we even think to count the things we consider so little as reasons to thank God?

If we think we have no reason to thank God, then we have to think again. How about thanking God because there's none as Holy as him? How about we thank him because there's none besides him, and neither is there any rock like him? That right there is enough reason to thank him.

Take a very good look at verse 3. Have you done that? What did you see? It says God is a God of knowledge, and by him, actions are weighed. This means that God knows everything. He doesn't need to be informed, and by him, actions are weighed. Isn't this another reason to thank him? That the God you serve is all-knowing. We should always seek to thank God because he deserves to be praised. The Lord bless his word in our hearts. Amen.

Daily Nugget: Do you thank God for the very things he does for you even for such things as sleeping, waking, and breathing daily?

Prayer: Lord, I thank you because you are God. Thank you for everything you do, though I can not seem to count them one by one, I know still that you have done so much for me. Help me to continue in the practice of thanksgiving in Jesus' name. Amen
