What Words Proceeds Out of Your Mouth?: Gospel Today Devotional - 14th September, 2022

Believers should be identified by the words they speak as well as they are very much identified by the lives they live. It is important that through our words, people get to see that there's a nature at work in us that would not permit us to talk the way others do and that our words at all times should be edifying to people around us. Words are powerful, aren't they? If well spoken, can encourage, and exhort a person, and if not, can discourage a person. The most important thing, therefore, is that the one who speaks sees to it that his words achieve the former not the latter.

What Words Proceeds Out of Your Mouth?: Gospel Today Devotional - 14th September, 2022

Let's say there was a disagreement between one who is a believer and one who is not, alright? Maybe the one who is not did something so unfair, and unacceptable. He knows this person is a believer and expects that he takes the matter lightly, and maybe in trying to settle the issue, they begin to exchange words, and suddenly he hears the believer say things like, "Is it because of my tie or scarf, and my big shirt or blouse? See, go and ask people about me, I am very crazy. You this prostitute, and little wonder you have five children with different fathers. Don't try me, please. I am not normal at all".

Don't you think such a person will be surprised? Of course. There's nothing else you can do to convince such a person you're a believer because your words show you're not. Let's see the verse of scripture below,

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." (Ephesians 4:29).

The apostle Paul knew what damage words could cause, and at the same time what positive influence they could have in the lives of people when used in edifying ways, and of course, believers need to speak edifying words, they are not to do otherwise.

So the apostle Paul exhorts that, no corrupt word should proceed out of your mouth ( words that are not consistent with the nature of God in you, demeaning destructive), but that which is good to the use of edifying (sound, healthy, and that is very much consistent with the nature of God in you), why? So that it may minister grace to the hearers (bring peace, encourage, exhort, and make glad their hearts).

The word of the Lord comes to you, and I today in a language so simple to understand, that as believers, our words should be wholesome, edifying words that would minister grace at all times to all who listen to us. The Lord helps us to abide by his words. Amen.

Daily Nugget: The words expected to proceed out of your mouth as a believer are not corrupt words but words that edify that they may minister grace at all times to the hearers.

Prayer: Lord, I repent from the hurtful words I say and I ask that you comfort those I must have hurt with my words. Dear Lord, please give me the grace to only speak words that are edifying so that all who hear may be blessed in Jesus' name. Amen.
