There are times certain things happen to people or they do some things and begin to think that those things happened to them or that they did those things, whichever the case may be, by their power.
It's just like a child of two years being asked to push a car, and when he begins to do so with the support of his father, the car moves eventually. What do you think the child would do? Let me tell you, he would be very happy thinking it was his effort that made him push the car. Let's see the text below before we continue with the illustration.
"It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not". (Lamentations 3:22)
While the child may think he pushed the car all by himself, it is important to note that the car would not have moved if the father didn't support him and that's because the child on his own didn't have the strength to do such a thing.
Similarly, we must understand that as believers we are nothing of ourselves and can do nothing by ourselves except the Lord helps us. Hallelujah. This therefore should create in us a sense of gratitude not to ourselves but to God for all the things he does for us.
It is of his mercies that we are not consumed. The implication of this is that were it not for his mercies, we would have been consumed. It is not because we did anything special or planned out our ways carefully. The only reason we are not consumed is because of his mercies. This is because his compassion does not fail. Instead of the child who gets happy and claps for himself after seeing the car move instead of thanking his father for helping him, we are to appreciate God the Father who as a result of his mercies, we are not consumed. The Lord helps us to thank him indeed. Amen.
Thought for the day: We can of ourselves and by ourselves do nothing except we are helped by the Lord. It is of his mercies that we are not consumed, not the things we do.
