In today's devotional, we shall be looking at the introductory aspect of this topic, and beginning tomorrow, we shall consider a few examples to help explain the topic better. I trust the Lord to help us in Christ's name. Amen.
Let's begin by defining the term affliction, shall we? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the term affliction may mean something (such as a disease) that causes pain or suffering: the state of being affected by something that causes suffering. Having said that, we shall consider the passage of scripture below:
"Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. (Psalm 34:19).
Scripture talks about the fact that the afflictions of the righteous are many but the question we should ask ourselves is this, why should the righteous even have afflictions not to talk of it being many? Well, the scripture does not explain that according to the text above.
However, one thing it does tell us is that the affliction of the righteous is many. It may not mean that the righteous necessarily go through sickness or pain; afflictions may come in form of other challenges too. It may even be that of being ridiculed for the sake of the gospel. Many indeed are the afflictions of the righteous.
That is not to scare you as we must suffer many things for Christ's sake but the comfort is that though our affliction is many, God will deliver us out of them all. He would not allow the affliction to overcome us as his ears are always open to our cry, and his eyes are upon us ( Psalm 34:15). If perhaps you are going through a rough phase now in your life being righteous, please know that God will deliver you. You will not be overtaken by that challenge. May this comfort your heart today.
Thought for the day: Although the afflictions are many for the righteous, God will deliver him from it all.
