The Affliction of The Righteous (3) : Gospel Today Devotional - 14th January, 2023

We have been able to cover the first and second parts of this series by the grace of God. In the first part, we were able to establish that the afflictions of the righteous truly are many but that the comfort we have is that God delivers him out of them all. Hallelujah.

The Affliction of The Righteous (3) : Gospel Today Devotional - 14th January, 2023

In the second part, we considered Job as an example of one who was righteous but had to suffer several things and we saw how God delivered him by restoring to him twice as much as he had lost. We were able to establish thus that one of the ways through which God delivers the righteous out of his afflictions is by restoring to him all that has been lost. To continue in the series, we shall be considering the passage of scripture below:

"Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, [58] And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. [59] And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. [60] And he kneeled, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep". (Acts 7:57-60)

Stephen according to scripture was a man full of faith and the Holy ghost. He did many great things in the name of the Lord and for that reason, he had to suffer. It began in the 6th Chapter of Acts where he was accused of teaching blasphemy.

And when asked if those things he was accused of were true, he ceased not to witness the gospel to them ( chapter 7). He still defended the truth even when his life was in danger. The people not being able to withstand the truth and the wisdom with which he spoke stoned him to death. Stephen died for the sake of the gospel if one would say.

He was afflicted. Yes. Did God deliver him? Yes. Unlike Job, Stephen's deliverance came in form of physical death. You may find this hard to accept but the believer has to see physical death as God's deliverance as well. While God can restore, protect, provide, heal, and on deliver his own, he sometimes may decide to deliver them by taking them away completely from life's trouble and pain. This is another way by which God delivers the righteous out of his many afflictions and such was the case of Stephen and even the Apostles except John the Beloved. The Lord causes us to think deeply about these things. Amen.

Thought for the day: While God delivers the righteous out of his many afflictions by restoring, healing, providing, protecting, and on, physical death can also be another way he chooses to deliver the righteous.

  1. Thank you very much. He shows mercy sometimes by physical death too. His ways are unexplainable.
