What Prayer Does to a Man: Gospel Today Devotional - 17th March 2023

The Scripture talks about a woman called Hannah who was married to a man called Elkanah. This man had another wife who was called Peninnah. The difference however was that Peninnah had children but Hannah did not. This in turn made Hannah unhappy, not because she couldn't bear children but because her peer who was supposed to comfort her made a mockery of her. Do we use the situations of other people against them when we are supposed to comfort them? Let's see the passage of scripture below:

"And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad". (1 Samuel 1:18).

What Prayer Does to a Man: Gospel Today Devotional - 17th March 2023

Each year, this man went with his family to a place called Shiloh to worship the Lord. Hannah however was never in a happy mood as the thought of not having a child became a very serious concern for her. The fact that Peninnah mocked her made it even worse.

This she kept enduring until she decided to pray. Her pain led her to God ( vs 6-17). In her pain, she prayed to God, and though she wept, still she prayed. Even if her lips alone moved, the words on her heart were audible for God to hear. She was mistaken for a drunk woman, still, she didn't stop. She had come to pray and nothing could stop her. How many of us go to God when we feel wronged, pained, or when are being ridiculed? How many of us take our burdens to God in prayer just like Hannah?

The focus of today's devotional was what followed after she prayed, the woman who was sad and unwilling to eat because of the burden in her heart went her way, ate, and her countenance was no longer sad. This is what prayer does to a man. It allows you to cast your burdens on God. It relieves you from having to bear the pain, shame, ridicule, and guilt alone. It brings you to a point where you can tell God everything and anything. When you are done, it refreshes you and restores you. This was what Hannah experienced and this is what we too can experience if we would just take our burdens to God in prayer. The Lord bless the reading of his word in our hearts in Jesus' name. Amen.

Thought for the day: We are to cast our burdens on the Lord in prayer cause he cares for us. How relieved and refreshed we would be if only we can trust God enough to carry our burdens for us.
