Unlike The Rest: Gospel Today Devotional - 6th April, 2023

The king had commanded that some category of people be fed in the land of Babylon so they could appear before him. Before this time, the land of Judah had been besieged, and the inhabitants were taken as captives into the land of Babylon. It was amongst this set of people that the king requested that some be selected from who had no blemish, and would be able to stand before him.

The king however made provisions for those who were selected. They were to be fed for three years so they could look very nourished when they would be presented before the king specifically for the purpose for which he had picked them. Amongst those picked were Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Today, by the grace of God, we shall be looking into the topic, "Unlike the rest", trusting that through this, the Lord would open our hearts to see that which he intends for us t see and that by seeing, we would apply our hearts to wisdom. The anchor text is seen below:

"But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself." (Daniel 1:8).

Daniel who was aware of this as well didn't do that which was instructed by the king. Was that intentional? Did he just prefer to disobey the instruction of the king? Why did he do that? Wasn't the food good enough? At least, it was for their good. But the scripture says that he, and not just him alone, alongside his three friends decided not to eat the meal from the king's table apportioned to them.

Let's remember that these were people who were brought into the land as captives. They had a system of worship and practice. Their dedication was to God alone, and not to any other, and now, they wouldn't want to do anything that will offend the One in whom they had believed. Also, seeing that these meals coming from the king's table could have been dedicated to their god, and not the Lord Jehovah, they had to make that decision.

The scripture says Daniel purposed in his heart that he wasn't going to defile himself even with the meals that came from the king, and he didn't. There's something would like you to take note of, the fact that Daniel didn't just have a purpose in his heart, he just didn't stop there but made sure that he didn't take the meal by speaking to the person in charge and requesting something else. In the end, they were grateful they didn't take the meal because God came through for them. *Unlike the rest* who must have taken took the meal, and defiled themselves, Daniel refused and was exalted by the Lord. The fact that others are doing something, and that something appears good does not mean we should do the same if it is not pleasing to God. We should at all times do that which alone would glorify the Lord, not defiling ourselves. The Lord help us in Jesus' name. Amen.

Thought for the Day: Let that which you do glorify the Lord at all times no matter the situation or environment.
