The script you are about to go through was first acted on stage and ministered to the people of Mbede Akaeze in Ivo Local Government area  of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. This was during the Batch B and C Baptisimal Rural Rugged Drama Night titled: The Man Jesus

ACT ONE SCENE 1

Curtains open on 2 men talking, they room is dimly lit, there is a fire burning at a corner in the room.

OKORONTA: Brother Laza, it’s not like I am being stubborn oh, but you are not listening to me, we cannot go to Uzuazu, those people are wicked and diabolical.
B.LAZARUS: My brother, are they are not people for whom Jesus died, the word of God says that the son of God is come to seek and save those that were lost. Uzuazu is wicked because it doesn’t know another way to live. Teach her righteousness and she would change.
OKORONTA: Brother Lazarus, I know you like taking the gospel everywhere, but mbanu, it’s not Uzuazu. See those people are controlled by a strong man called Ikoku, and that man (shouts) hmm, ajo mmadu, the man is wicked. So long as he is alive, we can’t reach there.
B.LAZARUS: Then we know where to channel our prayers towards. Who can enter the house of a strong man to make plunder without first binding him.
OKORONTA: Brother Laza, the man I am talking of is very wicked oh.
B.LAZARUS: That is why they need to meet the man Jesus na. He is good and kind and gives good things only.
OKORONTA: Hmmm I don’t know oh, let’s first pray again to be sure it is really God taking us there.
(A young lady runs in excitedly)
SOMACHI: Papa, papa, something good has happened to me oh (The two men wait wondering what her good news is till she gets to the stage.)

SOMACHI: Ah! Brother Lazarus you are here too, that’s even better, I can share the news with both of you. Prince Somto has asked me to marry him.

Okoronta: No, hope you said no!
Somachi: (looks at him in shock) But Papa, why? I thought you liked Somto.
B.LAZARUS: brother Okoronta, why, the young man is born again, he is hardworking and he loves your daughter?
Okoronta: And he is the Prince of Uzuazu (Somachi is quietly crying)
B.Lazarus: (sighs) Brother Okoronta, do you know it didn’t ever occur to me that bro Somto is prince in Uzuazu? I always assumed that he was a prince in one of the villages we have converts in. but now that you are ven saying he is a Prince in Uzuazu, don’t you think this is God leading us to that land? First by burden and now by marriage?
OKORONTA: Marriage to who?
SOMACHI: (Kneels crying before her father) Papa, bikonu, I won’t marry him if you say no, but bikonu, me ebere, I sincerely love him, afuriginaya, I want to marry him, and I have prayed about it, and I feel God supports it. Papa bikonu.
B. LAZARUS: Somachi stop crying, I don’t think your father’s problem is with the young man, I think it’s with his father the king , and the land of Uzuazu, we must get to the root of this matter today. Brother Okoronta, what is it about this land, were the other villages and this one we live in not evil and wicked before we preached to them? Why can’t we preach to Uzuazu, why must you turn your daughter away from a man that God has said yes to because of your bitterness and anger?
OKORONTA: (Sighs) I never wanted to tell you people this story oh. But it’s not bitterness, neither is it anger that is keeping me away from Uzuazu, it is fear. (Brother Lazarus and Somachi look at each other. He motions for her ti stand up. She stands up and sits down)
 
Okoronta: Yes, it is fear for my life, and the life of my daughter, and even for your life brother Laza, because if you take the gospel there, Ikoku would kill you. You see it is for our lives I fear. (Looks at his daughter) Somachi, you have always asked me to tell you about your mother, and how we lived in the forest for 12 years before meeting Brother Lazarus, (sighs), my dear, today I would tell you everything. You see, I married very young and my young wife Amaka did not have a child for me for many years. Until finally, she took in with you. Our lives changed the night she went into labor…..

ACT ONE - SCENE 2

Lights come on stage in a poor hut. A man is seen helping his pregnant wife into the hut. The woman is in labor. She groans and screams. The man is screaming for help and for the person inside the hut to come out.
OKORONTA: mid wife! Mid wife! My wife is due oh, it’s her turn to become a mother. Midwife, mama Adugo, ngwa ngwa please come and help us, bikonu, come out, Adugo where is your mother oh, midwife?
MAMA ADUGO: (shouts from the hut) E bu onye?
OKORONTA: Mama Adugo it is Okoronta the hunter, husband of Amaka, she is in labor.
MAMA ADUGO: Ah, Okoronta the great hunter.  Am coming out. (She rushes out to help the woman into the hut) Adugo, bring the hot water and the white rag.
(A YOUNG GIRL RUSHES IN WITH A BOWL OF WATER AND A RAG, THE MAN – OKORONTA PACES IN FRONT OF THE HUT THAT IS CLOSED WITH A WRAPPER)
OKORONTA: (Raises his hands) Ancestors, help me, help Amaka my wife, after 8 years of marriage, she finally has a pregnancy that stayed, BIko, gozie mo, please, let us see a reason to rejoice, please don’t let my enemies rejoice over me, biko, biko. I would take a boy, a girl, any child.
(The cry of a baby is heard, and a loud wail follows closely)
OKORONTA WHO WAS ABOUT TO REJOICE WHEN HEARD THE BABY’S CRY STOPS SUDDENLY AS E HEARS THE WAIL
OKORONTA: What does this mean, a cry and a wail?
BACKGROUND MUSIC: Ewo Ewo Ewo dirge
THE MID WIFE COMES IN WITH BABY WRAPPED IN A CLOTH AND HANDS STAINED WITH BLOOD.
MAMA ADUGO: (sadly) Okoronta, you are a man, you had a daughter
OKORONTA: (Jumps up screaming excitedly then stops suddenly) had a daughter? What do you mean “had”
 
Mama Adugo: (Whispers) This child cannot live, she killed her mother to come into the world. You know the custom of our people, she is an abomination to Mother Nature.
Okoronta: You mean Amaka, Amaka my wife is dead? (He is about to scream but the midwife quickly covers his mouth)
Mama Adugo: (Looks left and right) Okoronta, you must be a man, for the sake of your daughter
Okoronta: I don’t understand
Mama Adugo: See, not even Adugo my daughter knows that Amaka is dead yet.
OKORONTA: (shakes his head confused) Biko chere, I still do not understand.
MAMA ADUGO: Amaka got a vow out of me when she knew she was going to die (she says in a solemn voice) “promise me, promise me Adugo’s mother, my child must not die, my child must live.” I am keeping the promise I made to a dead woman. Take the child Okoronta and run. This child must live.
SHE HANDS THE CHILD OVER TO HIM
MAMA ADUGO: Run Okoronta, let your child live so that her mother can rest in peace.
HE TAKES THE CHILD FROM HER CRYING SILENTLY
MAMA ADUGO: Run great one, run, for the Strong man would soon be here. He must have smelt the death by now.
OKORONTA PICKS THE CHILD AND BEGINS TO RUN
Background music: “into the night, let death be far away
Onwubiko, let my daughter live
Ikoku eh, don’t take her away from me
Chimo eh, let my daughter live
 
MAMA ADUGO: Amaka, now you can rest in peace. Your daughter would live.

ACT ONE: Scene 3

The setting is in the king’s palace, a flute is being played on the background. The curtain opens on the palace with the king on the throne and his chiefs sitting around him
KING MUNACHI: Ndi ichie, I know its short notice, especially as we were not supposed to meet till the next market day. But my people, there is fire on the mountain, agwo nor na akrika. Ikoku himself sent a messenger to tell me he is coming and that I should assemble all my chiefs.
CHIEF 1: Hmm, Igwe, you said Ikoku himself?
KING :( looks at the chief who asked with disdain) Ichie Ude, apurum miri nor nu, I did not have water in my mouth, Ikoku would be hear soon.
CHIEF 2: But what could be the problem now, ogini? We have offered every sacrifice he asked us to offer. We killed 21 virgins 21 full moon ago, we sacrificed our biggest animals and gave up our best farm produce. What else does he need?
KING: we can only hope it’s something we can give this time without causing grieves to families again
BACKGROUND FLUTE MUSIC CHANGES TO DRUM ROLL
KING: He is here.
A MAN LOOKING EVIL AND WICKED HOLDING A CALABASH IN HAND AND A STAFF IN THE OTHER WALKS INTO THE STAGE. HE STOPS AND TURNS AND LOOKS AROUND, THEN TURNS AGAIN EVERY NOW AND THEN. HE ENTERS THE PALACE WITH HIS BACK. HE IS ALSO CARRYING A NATIVE BAG ON HIS SHOULDERS.
KING: Ikoku the great and terrible, mighty in battle, fierce and great, Odinaka, Ikeodiebu, we greet you
CHIEFS: Ikoku ehhhhhhh
CHIEF 1: Onye dike, Onye dike
CHIEF 2: Ajo mmadu!
IKOKU STOPS AND BACKS THE KING FACING THE AUDIENCE. HE DROPS HIS CALABASH ON THE FLOOR AND BRINGS A PIECE OF CLOTH FROM THE BAG WHICH HE SPREADS ON THE FLOOR AND SITS ON IT.
KING: Ikoku the terrible strong man, to what do we owe this great visit?
IKOKU: (looks into the pot and screams) Aru, an abomination has been committed. A woman was killed by her young one, yet I do not see child accompanying the mother to the spirit world.
CHIEF 1: Ikoku are you sure? We heard no death bells, and no ne…
IKOKU (Cuts in) Do you dare question me?
CHIEF 2: no Ikoku forgive him (eyes his fellow chief and signals for him to be quiet) He is only shocked that someone would even try to do this.
IKOKU: (angrily) Express your shock in silence or else I man ji ire gi ahu we kwu okwu ozo. Igwe, your people have sinned again, you know the rules, the soul that sins shall die, all the people involved have to die, nkpuru obi mere mmehe ga anwu onwu.
KING: Ikoku, even if this is true, (Ikoku turns and look at him) especially as it is true, it is true (Ikoku turns again and faces audience) how do we know the people guilty of this abomination?
IKOKU: Have Nkechi, wife of the dead Amechi, mother of Adugo, the midwife, have her summoned.
KING: Who is there? Guards, Guards!
TWO GUARD RUSH IN AND KNEEL IN FRONT OF THE KING BEHIND IKOKU
KING: Run to the house of Mama Adugo the mid wife and if you find anything that breathes in the house, bring them here, ozizo.
THE GUARDS RUN OFF AND CURTAINS CLOSE.
VILLAGERS ARE PASSING BY AND MAKING NOISE ALL AROUND THE STREET AS THE GUARDS PASS.
VILLAGER 1: Hmmm, those guards are in a hurry, I hope it’s not what I’m thinking.
(Two people crying firewood pass by, a hawker passes by, and they greet and keep moving)
VILLAGER 2: Nna, I fear that we are thinking the same thing o, I smell Ikoku all around this thing.
VILLAGER 3: But what is it this time around? What does he want?
VILLAGER 1: (looks around to make sure those passing by cannot hear) you know Amaka went into labor 3 nights ago?
VILLAGER 3: And so?
VILLAGER 1: Well, nobody has seen Amaka, Okoronta or the baby since then and Mama Adugo has said nothing. Iye ge me, something has happened.
VILLAGER 2: Miechunnu gi, after you people would say it is women who gossip. Okoronta and his wife are good people and they have been looking for a child for a long time. What are you suggesting?
VILLAGER 3: Nne chere, I have not seen them too.
VILLAGER 1: OOO
VILLAGER 3: I have not seen any of them and Mama Adugo have not opened her kiosk for three days now.
(They are still talking when they begin to hear screaming, they turn to look and find the guards dragging and carrying mama Adugo and her daughter. All three of them run away, the guards drag the women out through the back and drag them back up as curtain opens back on the palace scene. They fling them down in front of Ikoku, bow and exit)
Background Music: Ikoku eh
Ikoku
E din jo
You are evil
Children dying, mothers weeping
The old men are gnashing their teeth
But Ikoku, Ikoku is laughing
Because he knows what he’s doing
Ikoku eh

(Music fades)
KING: Nne Adugo, what have you done? Your late husband was my friend, why have you done this evil?
MAM ADUGO: (crying) Igwe, my only fault is keeping the promise I made to a dying woman. My daughter is innocent. Biko have mercy.
IKOKU: Silence woman. The only thing that can save you now, is to present the child and the husband.
MAMA ADUGO: Ikoku, (crying but stands up) Ikoku Ajo mmadu, you are evil. But I will tell you what Amaka the wife of Okoronta said before she died. A King would come to this land and we would open our gates to him. He would bring mercy and peace to our land and his kingdom shall be forever. Ikoku your reign would end! The man coming is a good man, and he is king, Eze ebube.
CHIEF 1: (Shouts fearfully) Mama Adugo, shut up, meichiunno gi. What is wrong with you? Do you want to die? Didn’t you hear him say he would free you?
KING: Mama Adugo, for the sake of my relationship with your late husband, I promise you that if you tell us where they are, we will spare you.
MAMA ADUGO: (laughs hysterically) spare me you say Igwe, did you spare the 21 virgins? How about the able bodied men you slaughtered last 3 yam festival? Igwe I am already dead. My daughter too is dead, but make no mistake, you are not the king of Uzuazu land, and it is this evil Ikoku who rules. You cannot spare me. But remember the words of Amaka, eze ofuru ga abia na kwa ochichi ya ga di rue mbe biyebi! Eze ebube.
IKOKU (screams) Take her out and kill her
KING: Guards (they rush in) Take her out and kill her.
THE GUARDS RUSH AS SHE KEEPS SCREAMING “A new king will come and his kingdom shall never end - eze ofuru ga abia na kwa ochichi ya ga di rue mbe biyebi!” The man coming is a good man. The king coming is a good king – Eze ebube
 
THEY CARRY HER AND ADUGO OUT. THERE IS A LOUD HIT THEN A SCREAM. ANOTHER HIT AND THEN SILENCE FOR FEW SECONDS AFTER WHICH THE BACKGROUND DIRGE COME IN.
IKOKU: It is finished. (He stands up and picks his cloth and calabash ad everything and leaves)
KING: (sorrowfully) my chiefs, who would save us? I am tired of my subject dying. Who would save us?
THE CHIEFS BOW THEIR HEADS IN GRIEF MAKING SORROWFUL NOISES

ACT TWO, Scene one

Curtains open on Okoronta, Brother Lazarus and Somachi who is crying on the floor.)

Somachi: You mean three people died because of me Papa?
Bro Lazarus: No Somachi. It was not because of you, it was because of the wickedness of man, a man that has made himself a God, but this is why this people need light, they need the truth, they need deliverance. They need to know that there is another man, a good man, a man that lives and reigns forever.
(A young man enters the stage quietly)
Somto: So that was what happened.
(The three people are shocked to see him)
Somachi: My prince how long have you been here?
SOMTO: Long enough to hear everything. Hmm, Mazi Okoronta, I am sincerely sorry about your wife and everything. I also apologize on my father’s behalf, but if I may boldly speak Mazi.
OKORONTA: Speak, onweghi onye ji ire gi, no one is holding your tongue.
SOMTO: Perhaps it was for this reason God preserved your life, (looks at the audience) or do you think you are preserved for only yourself? Do you think God saved you so you can hide the good news? No, no one lights a candle and puts it under a bushel. Let your light so shine before men, (faces Brother Lazarus), you told me that Jesus said we should go into the world and preach the gospel, how do I go into the world if I do not start from my home? Even Jesus said to begin from Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, until we reach the ends of the earth. My people know a wicked man. Now they must know of the good man, the man Jesus.
 
(Background Music: Till the Ends of the Earth by Pastor Chris Delvan Gwamna)
 
Okoronta: (Sighs) it is well, how is Ikoku now? Is he still in charge?
Somto: That man is a stronghold, he has not aged since I was born. He is still evil if not eviler. But Mazi Okoronta how did you hear of what happened after you fled?
Okoronta: That would be a story for another day, but just know everyone that supported me and my family are dead.
Somto: (folds hands across chest) Ewo, Uzuazu, so much evil and darkness
Bro Laza: Don’t give up my brethren. Let us now rejoice because light would come to Uzuazu
All: Amen oh

Act 2 Scene 2

Curtains open on the king’s palace. The king is sitting on the throne being fanned by one the guard, he is with his 2 chiefs, they are making merry about the successful harvest that year when the drums begin to roll. A guard rushes in)
 
Guard: Igwe, Ndi ichie, I greet you. Ikoku approaches.
King Munachi: (Sighs) Hmmm, would things always be like this? I wonder what calamity he brings with him this time.
Chief 1: Igwe, let’s be hopeful this time, we have no choice.
They all sit looking sad. Enter Somto holding Somachi in hand and they are followed by Brother Lazarus and Okoronta behind.
All: Igwe
King Munachi: Rise up my people. My prince, you have become scarce these days oh, (looks at Somachi) if not that we live in the same house I would have said a woman is involved in your disappearance, (the chiefs laugh)
SOMTO: (looks at his father and the chiefs) Father, why do you all look gloomy and sad?
King Munachi: Bia Somto, don’t change the subject, and who are your guests?
SOMTO: my father, the great king of Uzuazu, these people are my friends. This maiden, is Somachi, she is the woman I wish to marry.
K.MUNACHI: (Laughs) Ndi ichie, did I not say it, I said a woman must be involved.  Nne come.
(He stretches his horsetail to her and she goes and kneels before him while the chiefs nod their heads in affirmation whispering that she is beautiful)
K.MUNACHI: May the gods smile on you and be gracious to you, so thanks to you I would have a grandchild before I join my ancestors? ehn, you are finally making a married man out of my son, after years of pleading with him to take a wife, eh, dalu nne. Rise up my daughter. Tell me, are you a maiden of Uzuazu and who are your parents?
(Somachi rises and steals a glance at her father who nods his head and encourages her to go on)
SOMACHI: Your highness, I am a maiden from this land, I am Somachi, daughter of Amaka and Okoronta the great hunter.
K.MUNACHI: (Squeezes his face trying to think) which Okoronta is that, Somto, which hunter is Okoronta? Ndi ichie, do we have such a person?
(The chiefs shake their heads)
SOMACHI: Your highness, (stares at her father who motions for her to go on) I am the daughter of the late Amaka, wife of Okoronta the great hunter.
(The king sharply sits up)
K. MUNACHI: Aru!!!! Are you not the evil child who killed her mother and refused to die?
CHIEFS: Aru, abomination
OKORONTA: (Moves forward) Igwe my daughter is not evil!
K. MUNACHI (screams) Aru!! I take it that you are Okoronta? (Looks at Brother Lazarus) and who are you stranger? (Brother Lazarus makes to answer but he is caught off by Somto, so he quietly begins to pray)
SOMTO: Eh my father, remember you said you have been seeing changes in my life, and I told you I would tell you the secret behind it soon, Papa the secret is Jesus.
K.MUNACHI: Jesus? What is Jesus? Who is Jesus?
SOMTO: My father, Jesus is the son of God, sent to save us from sin and death. This man Jesus is also a good king.
K.MUNACHI: (Lost in thought) hmmm
CHIEF 1: Igwe chere, chere, my prince, is this Jesus you speak of a king?
SOMTO: Yes my chief
K.MUNACHI: (Stands up and paces up and down still thinking, then turns to face Somto again) And his kingdom shall never end?
SOMTO: (Excitedly) yes! My king how do you know this?
CHIEFS: (Screams) Aru!!! Abomination
(Drums roll and Ikoku enters the stage)
K. MUNACHI: The gods be thanked.
(Ikoku stands backing the characters on stage and facing the audience, his chest rises and falls rapidly as he is breathing very fast)
B. LAZARUS: Jesus, I sense so much darkness
OKORONTA: Of course you will, this man is Ikoku, he is everything bad and evil. He is the darkness you are sensing.
B.LAZARUS: Let us begin to pray
IKOKU: Your highness
K.MUNACHI: Ikoku for the first time ever, I am happy that you are here
IKOKU: An abomination has been committed
K. MUNACHI: Yes Ikoku you speak the truth, these strangers are the abomination.
IKOKU: No your highness, your son, Prince Somto has committed an abomination, he has opened the door for evil to enter the land. He must be sacrificed to appease the gods
CHIEF 2: Ikoku, you are saying that our prince, the heir to the throne, should be killed?
IKOKU: Yes, otherwise a great calamity would befall Uzuazu
K.MUNACHI: Is Uzuazu not already in calamity, anything that wants to happen should happen but the prince would not die, mbanu!
IKOKU: Igwe Munachi, you have exactly 2 days to comply with this order (turns to look at the king) or else! (He walks out of the stage)
K.MUNACHI: (slumps on his throne) Somto what have you done to us?
B.LAZARUS: (Steps forward) your highness if I may...
CHIEF 2: (CUTS IN) you may not!
SOMTO: (Eyes the chief) yes you may Brother Lazarus
LAZARUS: You see, (Okoronta serves as an interpreter) this Jesus that we speak about he is able to save Prince Somto and the entire Uzuazu land from the clutches of darkness. The bible says for this reason was the son of God made manifest that he may destroy the works of the devil.
CHIEF 1: Nna chere, hold on, you say this your Jesus can save our prince and our people from Ikoku? Are you sure, do you know who Ikoku is?
LAZARUS: (laughs) Chief, I don’t need to know who Ikoku is, I know who Jesus is, I don’t need to know what the problems in this community are, but I know who Jesus is. If your people would receive this Jesus, and turn to him, he would not turn you away and he would change the situation in this community for good. The son of God is come to seek and save those who were lost and to give them life in abundance. Would you open your gates to this man Jesus?
BACKGROUND MUSIC: LIFT UP YOUR HEADS OH YE GATES
K. MUNACHI: (Thinking) Somto, you trust these people? (Somto nods) stop nodding like an agama lizard, your life is in their claim that this Jesus can save, do you trust them, do you trust this Jesus that he can save you and save us all?
SOMTO: Yes my king, I trust and believe this Jesus, father didn’t you say I have changed for good and that everything I touch prospers, it is Jesus who is responsible.
K. MUNACHI: (sighs) Ndi ichie, what do you think?
Chief 2: My king, Ikoku gave us a 2 days deadline, if at the end of the two days nothing happens, let us open our door to this Jesus. If they fall sick or die within the two days, hmmm we would go and beg Ikoku.
CHIEF 1: Your highness I agree with his suggestion.
King MUNACHI: Okay, (points at Lazarus) do you agree? (Lazarus nods) because if anything happens to my son, I would personally kill you before Ikoku.
Bro Laza: So be it! (Turns at Okoronta and Somachi) My brethren, let us pray!
(They begin to speak in tongues as background music goes on and curtain closes)

Act 3 Scene 1 (4 Minutes)

(The scene opens with villagers walking to and fro each saying have you heard, it’s been more than 2 days, have you heard, Ikoku has fallen. Those are the people, let’s follow them.

IKOKU: NO! I rule this land, I own this land
Bro Laza.: Ikoku, the Lord is against you, because you would not enter yet stop others from entering, I come against you in the name of Jesus. The Lord whom you defile, is against you!
Ikoku screams and falls on the floor screaming his head, his stomach, his body, etc., he is writhing in pains.

He keeps preaching with Okoronta interpreting and they all walk out of the stage with the villagers following chanting Jesus!
