Has Your Wife Been Dancing? (Exploring God’s Commandments - Deuteronomy 5:6-21)

The day my wife brought our beautiful baby boy into the world is a day I will never forget. That exact moment is forever etched in my heart. When the midwife requested I come into her office to congratulate me, I was overwhelmed with joy - I was now a father!

Eager to see my wife and little one, I felt a surge of excitement bubble within me. But just as I was about to rush out, she paused and said, “Mr. Dayo, I hope you don’t mind - can I ask you something?” My curiosity piqued, and I pulled a chair closer to listen.

“Has your wife been dancing?” she inquired with a twinkle in her eye.

I chuckled, not quite understanding her question, but I dove right into my story. “Oh yes, Precious has been dancing for an hour every day since we tied the knot.”

It all started on Sunday evenings—she’d crank up her favourite tunes and dance like nobody was watching. Over time, I found myself joining her, and soon enough, our routine became a cherished part of our lives.

Then one fateful afternoon, we visited the doctor who confirmed our greatest news: we were expecting a baby! But even that news didn’t stop Precious from dancing. Initially, I was a bit apprehensive. I thought, “Isn’t pregnancy enough of a reason to take a break?” But no, she would simply smile and say, “Dancing is my covenant with God. Nothing will stop me - not even this.”

And dance she did, until just hours before her delivery!

As I recounted this to the midwife, she beamed at me. “You see,” she said, “the dancing was a big part of what made her delivery quick and smooth. While she was doing it for God, she was also taking care of herself.”

This sparked a thought that resonated deeply within me. It made me reflect on God’s commandments. The truth is that most of what God asks of us is actually for our good. It’s easy to fall into the mindset that we're just doing favours for Him, but really, God has nothing to gain from our obedience. Instead, we stand to receive blessings when we align ourselves with His will.

Think about the Israelites—they’re a poignant example found throughout scripture. Whenever they strayed from God or chased after other gods, the fallout was often harsh. It wasn't until they repented and turned back to Him that they found healing and restoration.

Conclusion

As we navigate our lives, let’s remember that God’s commandments are not chains binding us but rather guiding lights leading us to a flourishing life. How are you dancing to the rhythm of God’s will in your own life?
