Christian Fiction: The Reality Called Favour

“Dear, you will not believe what just happened!” David shouted from the sitting room, after receiving an email from his place of work.

“Dee-Dee, wait for me. I will be done with the main meal in three.” Lovett was in the mood to prepare her husband’s favorite for no reason.

“Come on time! This testimony is hu-uge!”

“I can relate. Just calm down for me.”

“You can relate? Relate with what? Is there something I should know?”

“Oops! …” She was on her way out of the kitchen. “You first.” She sat beside her husband with her left palm placed on her husband’s right thigh. That was her usual way of ensuring connection during conversations with her ‘Dee-Dee’ (Dear David).

“Not again.” David shook his head in disapproval. He always loved to hear his wife speak first, no matter the situation on ground.

“I’m sorry. I know, I know. That was why I didn’t want to give any hint that I also have a testimony. But sincerely speaking, you speak first, at least for the first time in this five-month marriage.” Lovett took her husband’s hands into hers to further persuade him to speak first.

“Dear, please …”

‘Fine! Enough of this cute face. You’ve won, just this time.” He readjusted himself on the couch to face his wife. “Are you ready?”

“What is with this suspense now? Abeg!” She knew that he wanted her to beg him a little.

Because ye have asked, ye shall receive!” This made her chuckle. “Sitting beside you is the Project Manager of Nestle Nigeria.” He finally looked up at his wife, only to see her frozen.

“Dear?! Dear?!” He tapped her to check if she was okay, because she frightened him a little.

“WHEN?! HOW?!” She eventually came back to life, with a great smile on her face.

“Well, remember that little idea I told you about and you helped in restructuring it with feasible and productive strategies? Well, while praying this morning, God told me to share what we discussed with the Managing Director. I was a bit skeptical about it at first, but I knew better than to discard the biddings of the Spirit. So, I summoned the courage to do just that during the lunch break, and what the MD said met me unawares.

“He explained that a board meeting was held an hour just before I came into his office, and that it was about changing some executives in the company. For some reasons only understood by her, the HR strongly suggested that I take up the office of the Project Manager. However, with what I had presented to him, he said he was certain that the rest of the board members would be convinced to agree with the HR. So, just before I called you here, I received an email from the company that I am the new Project Manager. Praise the Lord!”

Lovett didn’t respond with a HALLELUYAH but with a Halleluyah chorus. She sang so graciously and full of joy that a little idea could lead to a major promotion. When David actually came to her the day before, she only casually responded what she felt about his idea and gave strategies as if she were to be the one to accomplish that it.

Meanwhile, her husband was mesmerized by her expressive way of thanksgiving – singing, dancing, clapping. He joined her, and after a while, reminded her that he was waiting for her own testimony.

“Dee-Dee, you should have allowed me to sing the second song on my list,” David gave a don’t-cheat-me kind of facial expression. They had a deal from the beginning. “…, but I will also need you to know that you are standing beside the Head Mistress of the Becoming Leaders Group of Schools International, South West Region.” She cat-walked round the sitting room while he tried to understand what she said.

“Wait oh, which school? Is it that same school that denied you promotion after seven years of vigorous and fervent service?” David sat down in confusion.

“You got that right!”

“What changed, like really? What about the former HM?”

“Well, she took a three-month leave without informing the school board. So, the proprietor decided to pay us a surprise visit, all the way from Canada, and noticed the HM’s absence. While thinking on what punishment to give her, he went to her office and his mind led him to a particular cabinet, which contained my promotion letter dated four years ago. Still in wonder and anger, he decided that I replace her with immediate effect. Can you imagine that?”

She did not receive any response, which was strange. She turned around to look at David, only to see him lost in thoughts. “Now is your turn to turn off, abi?”

“This can’t be a coincidence.” David, still lost in thoughts.

“Dee-Dee, what are you saying?” She sat down to reason with him, her palm on his thigh.

“Do you remember what our devotional said this morning?” He urged her to remember.

“The Reality Called Favour?” The dots had not connected yet in her head.

“I experienced the Joseph’s kind of favour today, with my HR being the butcher at Pharoah’s palace speaking on my behalf,” He waited for her to understand and complete his statement.

“…, while I experienced the Esther’s kind of favour, with my HM being the Vashti that I was crowned to replace. WOW! This indeed can’t be a coincidence.”

He that finds a wife has found a good thing, and has obtained favour from God.” David said, thanking God for blessing him with Lovett as a wife.

“Actually, if one can chase a thousand, how will two not put ten thousand to flight?” Lovett responded.

Both of them took about two minutes to absorb this goodness of God, before they knelt down to appreciate God in praises and hymns and tongues. The whole atmosphere changed. It felt like heaven in their sitting room. They were so glad that God revealed to them what they would later experience that same day.

Unknown to them, an hour had passed. David’s tummy rumbled.

Omo! I have not eaten any correct food since morning.” David voiced out.

“Chai! Deeee-Dee! Which one is correct food now? What exactly are you trying to say?” Lovett was already smirking at this point. She knew her husband well. She was even surprised that he could wait that long.

“Well, as the priest of this house, it is time for my offering, for it is clearly stated in the book of Numbers …”

Lovett interrupted him before he started any long night sermon.

Oga mi, I’ve heard you. You cannot change. Luckily for you, God motioned me to cook your favorite tonight without telling me why. So, if you will permit me,” She turned towards the kitchen.

“Oh please. I am starving.” David responded with the most widest smile on his face.

… and so, this day remained a reality that they never forgot till date.

THE END.
