August 1, 177 AD 

On this day, Christians in Lyons (modern-day France) faced public trials in the amphitheater. Many boldly professed their faith despite severe persecution.

August 1, 984

On this day, Bishop Ethelwold of Winchester passed away. He was known for his efforts to repair the spiritual damage left by Danish invasions, promote the Benedictine order, and build monasteries and nunneries. The English people consider him a saint because he sold the treasures of the church to feed the poor, believing that objects could be replaced, but lives are not replaceable.

August 1, 1791 

On this day in Christian History, Samuel Seabury, the first American Episcopal bishop, crucial in forming the American Episcopal Church post-independence, passed away.

August 1, 1801

On this day, Jonathan Edwards, an early American pastor, theologian, and president of Princeton College, passed away. He is widely remembered as the Father of the First Great Awakening in America.
