A Nigerian cleric, Apostle John Okoriko, has expressed concern over what he described as the persistent failure of elected leaders to fulfil campaign promises, warning that the growing gap between political commitments and governance is weakening public confidence in democracy.
Speaking during a recent address, Apostle Zjohn, who is the Founder of Solid Rock Kingdom Church, Akwa Ibom State, lamented that many promises made to Nigerians during election campaigns often fade after politicians assume office. He noted that while citizens continue to place hope in successive administrations, many remain disappointed by unmet expectations in critical areas such as infrastructure, security, employment, education, and healthcare.
According to him, political leadership should be viewed as a sacred trust that demands integrity, accountability, and faithful service to the people rather than a platform for personal gain.
He urged those in positions of authority to honour the commitments they made to the electorate, stressing that credibility in leadership is built through keeping one’s word and prioritising the welfare of citizens.
The cleric also encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope despite prevailing challenges, calling on believers to continue praying for the nation while actively promoting righteousness, good governance, and civic responsibility.
His remarks come amid renewed public conversations about the performance of elected officials. A recent civic accountability assessment indicated that while some policy promises have been implemented, a significant number remain either partially fulfilled or unfulfilled, reinforcing calls for greater transparency and accountability in governance.
For Christians, the Bible consistently presents leadership as a stewardship entrusted by God. Scriptures such as Proverbs 29:2 remind believers that “when the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice,” underscoring the importance of leaders governing with justice, honesty, and compassion.
As Nigeria continues its democratic journey, faith leaders have repeatedly called on public office holders to demonstrate integrity by translating campaign promises into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.
