A coalition of Christian organisations and rights advocates has petitioned the United States government, expressing concerns that retaining a same-faith presidential ticket ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election could further heighten insecurity and deepen feelings of political exclusion among Christians.
The petition, submitted by the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN) to the United States Embassy in Abuja, was addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump and copied to the U.S. Secretary of State, members of Congress, and heads of diplomatic missions in Nigeria. It was signed by the coalition’s chairman, Zariyi Madaki, secretary Nasiru Jagaba, and several other Christian leaders and advocates.
In the document, the coalition urged the U.S. government to maintain diplomatic attention on the security situation affecting Christian communities in Nigeria. It also appealed for continued scrutiny of Nigeria’s status as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), arguing that recent attacks on Christian communities demonstrate that greater action is needed to safeguard religious freedom.
The group further argued that continuing with a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in 2027 could reinforce perceptions of religious imbalance in national leadership. According to the coalition, Nigeria’s religious diversity should be reflected in its highest political offices to strengthen national unity and public confidence.
Beyond the issue of political representation, the petition called for transparent investigations into major attacks on Christian communities, prosecution of perpetrators, improved humanitarian support for internally displaced persons, and stronger measures to address insecurity rather than focusing primarily on the rehabilitation of repentant terrorists.
The development comes amid renewed national conversations over the composition of political tickets ahead of the 2027 elections, with various Christian and political groups continuing to express differing views on the implications of the same-faith ticket for national cohesion and inclusive governance.
