Covenant University and Landmark University have emerged among Nigeria’s top-performing universities in the latest edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, joining eight other Nigerian institutions in the global top 2,203.
The July 2026 edition ranked the University of Ibadan (UI) as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university, followed by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). (Punch Newspapers)
Covenant University, Ota, secured fourth place in Nigeria and 1,522nd globally, while Landmark University ranked fifth nationally and 1,659th worldwide.
Nigeria’s top 10 universities
The ranking placed the following institutions among Nigeria’s top 10:
1. University of Ibadan — 1,291st globally
2. University of Lagos — 1,355th globally
3. University of Nigeria, Nsukka — 1,397th globally
4. Covenant University — 1,522nd globally
5. Landmark University — 1,659th globally
6. University of Ilorin — 1,883rd globally
7. Obafemi Awolowo University — 1,986th globally
8. Ahmadu Bello University — 2,068th globally
9. University of Port Harcourt — 2,077th globally
10. Federal University of Technology, Akure — 2,203rd globally.
The results place Covenant and Landmark ahead of several long-established public universities, highlighting the growing presence of Nigerian private universities in international rankings.
UI leads Nigerian universities
The University of Ibadan emerged as the country’s best-performing institution, ranking 1,291st in the world.
UNILAG followed in second position nationally at 1,355th, while UNN came third with a global position of 1,397th.
The latest results also show the strong performance of universities in Nigeria’s South-West, with UI, UNILAG, Covenant University, Landmark University, University of Ilorin and Obafemi Awolowo University all featuring prominently among the country’s top institutions. (Western Post)
What the Webometrics Ranking measures
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities evaluates universities using indicators linked to their web presence, visibility, openness and research excellence.
The July 2026 edition assessed more than 32,000 universities worldwide, providing a broad picture of how institutions are performing in terms of their digital visibility and contribution to the global academic community.
For Covenant University and Landmark University, their positions among Nigeria’s top five universities represent another indication of the increasing global visibility of Nigeria’s private higher education sector.
The latest ranking also offers a snapshot of the competitive landscape within Nigerian higher education, with both public and private institutions seeking greater recognition for research, academic output and international visibility.
