5 Benefits of Our Union with Christ

Whenever the union with Christ is discussed,  it refers to the relationship between the believer and Jesus Christ, who is the central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation.

The Bible records saying “For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life" (Romans 5:10). By this, it is right to say that being a Christian is not only to live in and for oneself, but to live in and through Jesus Christ. By extension, it also means that one should live in service to the next door neighbour.

God's word in Ephesians 1:7 says that we have redemption in Christ. God’s purchase of us from bondage to sin, Satan and death becomes real and effective for us in connection with Christ. Without this relationship, (this connection called the union with Christ), we’re dead and there’s no redemption.

The believer is declared righteous before God because we are in Christ.  It is not our goodness that brings salvation.  It is Christ’s.  Now, since we are found in Him, His righteousness is credited to our account. As a result of our union with Christ, we have access to certain spiritual benefits. All of this is because we are in Christ just as Paul wrote to the church in Philippians 3:9

Benefits of the Union with Christ

1. Wisdom and discernment (James 1:5)

The presence of the Holy Spirit in a believer, the endless teachings and practices for living in the Bible, as well as the direct access to the creator of the Universe through prayer are three strong benefits we have as believers.  As we have a strong union with Christ, we have these gifts and resources to find discernment and make good choices even in a world like this.

2. Peace in times of trouble and confusion (1 Peter 5:7)

The fact that a believer has a strong union with Christ does not mean that troubles and storms of life won't come around. Just like Jesus and His disciples experienced the storm, we cannot avoid all stressful or bad situations, but we can find peace in the midst of them when we ask the Lord for help. That is one other thing the union in Christ entails.

3. Forgiveness of past and future sins

One other benefit of being in the union with Christ  is knowing with certainty that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross means that all of your sins are forgiven; past, present, and future. You are never too far gone that He can’t reconcile you with Him. The Bible rightly says we are joint heirs together with Christ as a result of our adoption and new birth into the family, a package that comes with total cleansing from every past and current record of sin.

4. Being Above only (Deuteronomy 28:13)

Yes we may face some challenges as Christian but that doesn't mean that the promise of God will not be fulfilled in our lives. We have a bigger purpose and God is not done with us yet, so yes, I can say we are above only as long as we remain in union with Christ.

5. Eternity in Heaven (John 3:16)

This gives me so much joy Knowing that our future is secure while acknowledging this earth is not our home is one of the greatest benefits of being in union with Christ. Even in the midst of the unknown, we have a foundational pillar to lean on and place our faith (HEAVEN).
