What makes life in the New Covenant different from the Old Covenant? What's so special about the New Covenant that made Peter say, "This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you... It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen." (1Pet 1:10,12)? What is gracious about this salvation that makes it so desirable? The answers to these questions are what we would be looking at in this post.
"And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." (John 1:16,17).
The "don't and dos", the rules and regulations, all came through Moses. But the power to do the "dos", and avoid doing the "don't" was not available. Yes, they know what God wants them to do and what God doesn't want them to do, but the power to follow through with this was not there. One thing man has failed to understand is that the knowledge of good does not automatically give you the power to do good. And just because you know something is bad, doesn't mean that you will have the power to resist it. This is why Paul made this statement in the Bible;
"I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate... I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway." (Rom 7:15,17).
The Old Covenant people had the law that tells them what is right and what is wrong, but they didn't have the power to do what is right and say no to that which is wrong. As such, they had to struggle a lot. Yes, the law came through Moses but the grace to fulfill the law came through Jesus. The New Covenant life is a kind of life where the people graciously and effortlessly fulfill the law without even trying.
They make it look so easy. Yes, that very thing that the Old Covenant people were struggling to do, and those who have some level of success feel like the superman of their days. Now the New Covenant people are empowered with so much grace that they do every single one of them without consciously trying to follow the law. It just comes naturally to them. They do it effortlessly. Such an amazing life.
Now, if you are not experiencing this, it doesn't mean Jesus has failed us. You need to get all the knowledge about a thing if you want to be able to use it perfectly. If you don't have accurate knowledge of the New Covenant you won't be able to enjoy its fullness. Our Lord has designed it so perfectly. Those who truly hunger for righteousness will get it in abundance, they will overflow with righteous works.
